Generator Maintenance

Yahoo Message Number: 117274
Getting the coach ready for travel in the next few months so I'm checking all the fluids.

Regarding the Generator...

The manual says that the cooling system is filled with a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol anti-freeze and water when it leaves the plant.
it says to use ethylene or propylene glycol anti freeze solution that contains a rust and corrosion inhibitor.

So, ladies and gents is there some type of special coolant I need to buy or it just one of those gallon containers that contain a 50/50
mixture and top the coolant off. Do I need to make sure it's for a diesel engine?

Or do you buy a gallon of concentrate and mix it yourself with distilled water?

looking for suggestions and what to buy?

Thanks

Dave

Dave, I believe Cummins and Cat use different coolants. There are several different options for the Cummins. I would check with your local Cummins dealer for the best option. I'm not familiar with the Cat so maybe a Cat owner can chime in here! Travel safe!!

There is a coolant designated GL5 that is supposed to mix with all colors and is a 50/50.

Hi Dave, I'm assuming you're got an Onan, which I think is a Cummins product. When I did maintenance I couldn't find any special statement about type of coolant.

Lee again. What I found in the literature is the same thing you found. I went with an extended life O'Reilly's product.

Dave, I attended a Onan service class at the Redmond FMCA rally few years ago. I remember they said to use automotive type coolant at the 50/50 mix.
ie, not Diesel engine coolant.
I have the QD 8000 Onan.

Your best bet as a wise head in this group once said years ago is to drain it and use the same coolant that you use in your engine. So I use Rotella ELC in my Onan QD. that way you always have the right coolant with you if anything happens

Hi Folks,
Why is old technology coolant still being used in diesel generators? It's a waste of money.
Use OAT coolant lasts which 150,000 miles (about 4000 hours) in your coach diesel engine and recommended for your diesel generator. I did add a 2nd overflow container for the engine and generator. All well documented in my posts from some time ago.

When we changed the engine over to Final Charge, I changed the Generator coolant at the same time. This way I cary two gallons of concentrated Final Charge in case I ever need to top up either the engine and or generator coolant.

Those of you with Cummins who have accessed the IRV2 Cummins forum, may recall Spike45 (RIP!)? He was retired from Cummins/Fleetguard, and was very helpful sharing his knowledge. It was his recommendation to go with Peak Final Charge, vs Cummins longer life coolant. He pointed out you could usually find the 50/50 mix of Peak Final Charge at major truck stops. So getting coolant if needed on the highways, would be easier.

I had a hard time finding the Peak Testing Kit for the Final Charge coolant. NAPA showed a part number for it, and price, but never could get it ordered in. I called Peak's Tech Support, and explained my lack of success locating the Test Kit... The Tech put me on hold for about 90 seconds, came back on and asked for my address. They shipped me a kit for free!!

I know the ISL ran about 5-7 degrees cooler on Final Charge, so figure it might also help the Onan QD8500 in our rig run a bit cooler too:)!

SCA Additive? Nope. Put on the WFxxxx dummy coolant filter. And actually just had that changed after 4 1/2 years (Cummins said it was not required, but I had them change it anyways. Lost about 2 gallons of Final Charge during the change over, so had them use my stock of 1 Gallon concentrate to top it off. And bought a new gallon to go into the storage bay. (Peak said the shelf life of an un-oppened bottle of coolant was rather extensive. Don't recall the number he said, but basically not to worry about the stock getting old if un-oppened:)!)

Bet to all,
Smitty
