Hurricane heater.

I have never used this heater nor have I had it serviced. It just started to leak coolant. The tech By-Passed the furnace knowing that I would not be using it. However I should have it repaired. Is there anyone who specializes in these units?

I usually have mine serviced at one of the FMCA National Conventions. Last year they serviced my Hurricane Furnace at the Gillete, WY, convention. Don't know if they will be at the convention in Minot, ND, in August but if they are there I will have them do an annual service. I had them do a 5 year service on it a couple of years ago and had the burner tube replaced at that time.

If you have questions, contact ITR. I've heard you can get good answerw from them over the phone.

You might contact Kevin Waite or Eric Olstrom to see if either of them service the furnace or if they know of someone in your area.

It depends where it's leaking coolant from. If it's the water jacket it's for the trash.

So the jacket is not repairable?? It would need to be replaced with a new, used, or rebuilt???

This is my third year with this coach, and I have not had any need for this heater as I only need the heat pumps on the roof.

It's unlikely that the jacket has given way. Hurricane uses the engine coolant as its heat transfer medium. Given that, the most probable cause of jacket failure, freeze damage, is not likely to occur.

The downside to the Hurricane system is that the coolant is circulated through a coach-wide network of hoses including the heat exchangers, pumps, and the Hurricane itself. Many connections and possible sources of leaks. Chances are that your leak is at one of those connections.

You don't say where you're located but the US head office for Hurricane is in Vancouver, WA. They're very helpful and if going there is not convenient, they can refer you to a Hurricane servicing location.

We've had both Hurricane and Aqua Hot. I prefer the Hurricane because it is simpler, cheaper to repair/service, and more robust.

Some will argue that the Aqua Hot provides unlimited hot water. True, but if you need more than the 10 gallons available in the hot water heater, plus the tempering cold water mixed with it to take a shower, maybe a motel is a better solution.

Make sure that the input output hoses on Hurricane unit are not leaking , It is very hard see if they are due to the fiber glass packing around the boiler. If it is dripping out around the exhaust pipe it will make you think, that the boiler is leaking . that what happened to my unit. All that was needed was new hoses and clamps.
