An easy solution to replacing the tubing in the windshield wipers

I wanted to share with you guys how I finally solved the problem of finding and replacing the windshield washer fluid tubing that runs inside of the wiper arms. Turns out that NAPA has a tubing, part #H457 that works perfectly and has a slightly thicker wall than the stock stuff, hence should be more durable.

It is just fractionally larger than 1/8" OD but goes in easily if you use plumbers clear silicone grease, which will not deteriorate the rubber and is in fact good for it, lightly over the first few inches you are going to feed in. I inserted it from the spray head end and it fed through the arm easily. I used a small screwdriver to pop the end out by the start of where you feed it through the spring. then it fed nicely through the spring and I used the small screwdriver again to pop it up at the end of the spring.

The whole job took about 2 minutes. I think the NAPA tubing feeds easier because it has a slightly higher wall thickness and hence is stiffer. But I had no problem getting it over the nipple ends on the spray head assembly and also the nipples that are next to the wiper shafts. Again, I lightly used a little of the silicon grease to make it easy to shove the tube all the way over the nipples.

We're setting sail on a 5500 mile five week trip in our CC "land yacht" on Saturday. This will be our longest excursion thus far and we are really excited!
