If you were to purchase a new RV how many slides would it have to have?

The way motorhomes depreciate, there is no way we would buy new. We prefer to let someone else take the big hits up front. We keep our motorhomes longer than most, and I don't have much confidence in slides lasting a long time. No slides for us!

We considered this question carefully, looked at the various set ups and concluded for us that one slide, the larger sofa/dinette slide was optimal. We only sleep in the bedroom and find it quite ample without a slide. As an engineer, my philosophy is KISS, keep it simple, stupid. Each slide adds weight and stuff to break down or leak. We just didn't think the bedroom slide added that much utility.

I would never purchase a coach that slides the kitchen. First, these slides are shallower so you end up with significantly less net space. Secondly, as the coach ages, moving all that plumbing and electrical equipment, including propane lines, could lead to problems. We all know the QC of this industry isn't great and that includes CC. I just think that sliding the kitchen is asking for trouble.

I wouldn't want a slide on the door side as that would cause problems with some camping sites and interferes with patio space. I think triple slides are a fad that will pass as people find out how many camp sites can't accomodate them, how much CCC they lose, and the mechanical problems they experience as the things age.

The big LR slide provides maximum space with minimum problems and puts that space where you spend most of your time. We don't intend to buy another RV as this one should do nicely until we are ready to quit. But if I did, more than one slide would be a hard sell for us.

Three if new and two if used. Why? I have two now and wish we had a third slide.

It interesting that the country coach people want at least one to 2 slides and the foretravel people feel concerned about even one slide. must be how you are sold about slides.

I agree, for full-timing, two if used. I never thought that I'd want more than two but now that we have two, we know we'd like three (1 living room dinette slide and 2 in the bedroom). Now our bedroom has a large slide which slides the width of the RV queen bed two night stands and a triple door wardrobe. This gives us a bedroom with a large counter with chair well.
Nancy can set up her sewing machine and doesn't feel claustrophobic while I can be at the dinette tying flies or playing on the computer. This gives us both "our space" which is nice. We now consider the possibility of 4 slides.
We're not convinced yet but the idea is "growing" on us.
The biggest concern, for us, when considering slides is that the coach must be usable with the slides in for those few instances when we can't put them out for whatever reason.

Slides won't be going away unless the economy gets so bad that no one can afford the slide models.

I agree for the most part, but we have a 2 slide 36' Intrigue and have seen how much inside storage can be lost my multiple slides.

Have others noticed the same thing?

Two, new or used. The two slides gives you enough extra room (unless you want to square dance) without the significant loss of storage that occurs (in and out) with each additional slide. Also, I agree with others, that there are enough times when you have to have your slides in, that with 2 we are still comfortable and don't lose the ability to access anything. (I love our Suite of Dreams (2001 model)...later models with larger engines had less CCC. Best rig CC ever made!) (Also, the passenger side slideouts are just asking me to bang my head on them more frequently than the driver's side ones! I still have a scar from a gash I got on that one! )

My situation with Yahoo has been tenous thelast week. I have read all the posts on slides, but couldn't answer. Here's my two bits worth. The new Ovations and Chateaus (2004) and the 2005 Magnas and Affinities all allow you full access to full size storage bays without having to crawl on your knees. The slide mechanism doesn't pro trude into the storage compartment.
It is either above in the case of the X slide on the curb side, above in the bed room or surounds the bays on the street side. Even with Slimslider Aluminum trays mounted in my 98 Allure, it was a hassel. Using bi-directional trays (3) in our Ovation, life is a lot easier. When we are in parks that are quite narrow, we leave the curb side X slide in. The Street side Slide is 32" deep and equals the earlier opposing three slide units, plus it gives you a flat floor.

We bought our '98 Intrigue last year. Didn't want any slides then ... don't want 'em now. We've been RVing for 37+ years and are "most-of-the-timers," spending as much as 3-1/2 months at a time on the road.

At least three. I have three slideouts in my Inspire and the extra space in the living room is great! Only worry is that it is something else to break.

At least two; three if I found one I liked. But! Unless I win the lottery, I'm in this coach for the duration. LOL

We have a 2005 Magna on order and we just changed our order from 4 slides to
3. When we ordered the new coach we wanted a sofa bed with an air mattress. On
the 40 ft Mag if you get the 4th slide you must take a short sofa with a jack knife bed, less cabinets and a smaller.windows. So we eliminated the patio slide. Three slides are enough.

In 1995 the president of Safari stood up in front of the 500 coach owners at a home coming and said they would never build a slide because they were always problems. He also said Safari would never have air brakes, they alwayed leaked. Well everyone knows what happened to safari.
In 99 I said I did not need a slide but in 2000 we purchased an Intrigue with one slide and liked it so much we traded in 2001 for a Magna with 2 slides.
That Mag did so well at 47k miles, we will trade for a 3 slide 05 Mag. The slides have worked well and you don't need to open the bedroom slides when the campsites don't permit you to use the space. Everyone wants slides and coaches without slides will bring a lot less then slides are worth.
Of course we like space when it makes sence. We just finished building an RV house in Florida with 3 bedrooms 3 baths and a 2000 sf garage for the RV, 2 cars and 2 golf carts. So some people need lots of room.

We've ordered an '05 Magna with 4 slides, after seeing the great roominess, trading in our '00 Intrigue. In order to not lose basement storage with the tandem wheels, we are getting a 42'. I do think more slides are what's in the future, and since we had no trouble with our one slide in 4 years, don't expect any with these.
But like any other thing on your coach, things CAN break down. I personally think it's worth taking the chance. (And it is very livable with slides in.) I do have a question for those of you with 42' and 45' coaches, do you have more replies of "no" or "no problem" when calling ahead for a site? We've been in many campgrounds where the sites seemed to be exactly 40' long, and our nose was just at the road. I'm not going to worry about this, just curious. Judy Schoolcraft

Hi Judy,

We have a 42 foot Affinity and have had no problems with Camp Grounds turning us down. If anything some of the campgrounds were a bit untruthful on whether we will fit. We have had a few tight spots, mostly lined with trees, but nothing serious.

Seems like an interesting question. Isn't the answer: As many as they make? More slides, more room.

Drawbacks, I suppose, (if any) would be:

Additional weight and potential problems? Loss of storage and/or access to storage bays Greater initial cost of the rig

As for me, I have an old girl, a 99 Intrigue with one lonely slide. I would love to have at least a bedroom slide, but I'm not ready to cowboy up for a new unit just for that.
Having too many slides is like having too much horsepower or being too rich or too thin, huh?

Happy camping
