Water in Inverter compartment

Just ruined a weekend trip. Was driving in rain and decided to stop at a campground for the night. Connected my new 2001 Intrique to 110v and the inverter would not switch to shoreline, we did all the usual things, waited for surge to more, checked out power at site, shut off inverter, etc., decided to look into the inverter compartment as we had a Heart before and it had circuit breakers right on the inverter. Much to our amazement when we opened the compartment to find about an inch of water in bottom of compartment, enough to half cover a 12v solenoid and the large fuse that are mounted on the floor of the compartment, and of course the inverter had the bottom sitting in the water! We have NO idea where this water came from, but we shut down the system (no need to get zapped when standing in water playing around. It was still raining!) closed up the unit, got our campfee back and headed home right away. Took over 3 hours of additional driving in the rain when already tired, but we got home safe. Now to try to find out from dealer and CC where the water came from and get all the rest of the repairs.
Has anyone experienced similar problems, especially the water problem??? John Perkins, Rochester, MN

Hello John

If you have hot water heating(Wabasto) check the pump which is located on the floor of the electrical bay.

Mine leaked, however there would be anti-freeze in the water(green).

Thanks for the quick comeback. We did consider it being coolant, especially since it has just had the Hurricane plumbing recall, but the water was basically clear, no coolant color. CC has called me and they have authorized a new Invertix, (it being in an inch of water, it will have problems in the future anyway, so may as well replace it) and think the source may have been a poor seal around the wheelwell. This is the first time we ran it in any rain. We will be looking later today to see if we can see any place where it may have come in.

John,

Sorry about your weekend. If the 2001 location is similar to the 2000 location (behind a panel in the battery bay) I would assume that the inverter compartment has an opening in it to the outside world and the water is off of the road, thrown up by the rear wheels. You could be lucky (not usually my experience) and simply have caused the GFI breakers to pop. These are the buttons between the two outlets on one or two of the dual 110VAC outlets scattered around the coach interior. One is usually marked Test and the other Reset. Press the Reset on these in the hope that, having drained the water out of the inverter, everything will come back up.

Let me know how you make out,

Peter.

When we pulled off the main panel of the inverter compartment water streamed out of the middle screw hole, that is about 5 inches up from the bottom of the channel, and from the amount of water that ran out, we would guess that the channel had at least 10 inches of water in it!, We are thinking it did come in through a bad weld in the wheelhouse, which opened in the channel, and at the bottom of the channel, ran out into the compartment. There is a water line about 2 inches deep in the compartment on the panel. When talked to Country Coach service in Junction City they admitted ours was the 4th one to report the same conditions in the last TWO DAYS! They had already been talking about it in their engineering meetings to try to determine how to correct the leaks. I have an appointment at the dealer on Tuesday and CC promised that a new inverter, plus the large fuse, soleniod, and two relays that are in that compartment will be there to be replaced. We will see!!! AND they also have to make sure the compartment is properly welded and sealed.

John,

I guess it was fortunate you were just on a quick weekend trip - could have ugly in the middle of a far-from-home vacation. It seems probable that this is a 2001 "feature" since we (and I'm sure, numerous others) have driven many miles in torrential rain in our 2000 Intrigue.
With the number of significant design flaws and serious safety issues that keep surfacing with these coaches, I truly wonder if CC is not simply out of its depth with this class of vehicle. Certainly we have been frequently and repeatedly disappointed in our choice of a quality motor home - we have had more problems numerically, more problems of a serious nature and more "shop" time in the miserable 17 months of CC ownership than we had in the previous 10 years of high mileage class A RV use.

Hope your repair goes as promised...

Peter.
