leaking toilet flush valve

Have a 1999 Intrigue, #10801. It has a Sealand toilet-Traveler model. The pedal to flush the toilet has sprung a leak that only occurs while flushing, and seems to be worse after a trip, any ideas or like problems? Does the whole valve need to be replaced ($40.00 at local RV store) or can I get away with just a washer or two? thanks, Rich Trachta

RE: Leaking Sealand Toliet

Leaking onto the floor or into the bowl?

If it's leaking into the bowl you can pull the valve off and flip the rubber valve seat over, If it's leaking onto the floor the shaft seal is shot and that will require a new valve. (or it may be just a loose water supply line?)

If your bowl is not holding water it would be a good time to replace the bowl seal, also replace the bowl ball valve if it has deep grooves or chips on the sealing edge.

I took the time to add a gate valve on the supply line. It was a real pain to have the water off all the time in the coach until repairs were made to the toilet valve.

Keep a large damp rag handy to plug the drain hole if you remove the bowl !! Also be ready for all the jokes about what kind of job it is. :-(

Jim: Hopefully it isn't leaking onto the floor. We stayed in San Diego one winter and the folks next to us in a Dutch Star were traveling with their parents. During the night, one of them used the toilet and the valve stuck open.
They all slept through it until morning. What a mess. All of the basement compartments were soaked, all of the coach floors too. They called a disaster cleanup van and unloaded everything for two days to dry out. Not to mention the eventual de-laminating of the floors and squeaks later on. Happy campers? Not!
The word of caution: Don't mess with leaky toilets, they will get you in the end.
