Advice on 1998 Allure

Hello,

We are in the market to buy our first DP. There is a '98 Allure, 36', 67,000 miles, Great Room Slide, 325 Cummins for sale by a private party. Can anybody help me out on this particular model, year for things to look for when I see later this week? Asking price is $89,000.

I can only say that we have a 2002 ALLURE 36 with triple slides. It is an excellent handling coach; possibly the best on the market. There ARE quality issues....leaky windshield, etc., but you can't beat the ride.

You may want to verify, but I believe that there are some major design differences betwee that model year and say a 2000 model. One of the major differences is the independent front suspension, tire size and chasis structure design. While I am not syaing it is a bad design to avoid, you should be aware of the differences.

If you are looking for an inspection check list of some kind, look in the files section and there you will find a list I put together and used when I was looking at used coaches. I have updated it on occasion when I discover something that I should have found during the presale inspection. You may find it of some use. It is in Excel format and can be modified to suit your needs.

I have a '99 Allure bought new in '98 and have 61,000 miles on it.
The coach is a great handling coach and have had very few problems with it. That model year does not have all the electronic bells and whistles on it so you should not have major problems with it. I suggest that you get all of the paper work on it--repairs, recalls, etc. Also, take a close look at the slide for any water damage that might have been caused by a leak around the slide. The slide would be my major concern and hopefully the seller will be honest about it.
As far as the mileage, it is just barely broken in.
If the unit is clean and looks good on the outside and is really clean on the inside it would make an excelent entry DP coach.

Thanks to all for the advice. We will be seeing the coach tomorrow. I did find out it is on a DynoMax chassis so I assume it would have IFS, or did that come later with DynoMax? Thanks to Jim for the PDI Checklist. I will print it out and take with me. That is just what I was looking for!

Well, we looked at the '98 Allure today and quickly realized that for us a 36' coach needs at least 2 slides to be liveable. The bedroom was just too cramped and didn't have enough closet space.
So, I guess we will keep looking for something with 2 slides and maybe a little newer than 1998.

98 Allures have an exterior finish issue. They have gel-coat and paint with clear coat on the exterior. Clear coat doesn't like to stick to gel-coat and will peal off.(Intrigues) So you won't have that problem except over the windshield. The gel-coat will get milky looking and the roof will become powdery if you don't clean and wax the coach 3or 4 times a year. You'll find Mequires marine gelcoat waxes and cleaners becomming your best friends.
Full paint jobs didn't happen until 02. Oh I believe Magna an d Affinity folks have the same problem as Intrigues with peeling on earlier coaches.
TWI 98 Allure 30255, 2004 Intrigue 11731. Country wanted $10,000 to remove all the hard ware and restore the Gel-coat, paint the coach, and then clear-coat the entire coach. Now you know why I have a newer coach. Plus its 42' will turn inside the 98 36' is quieter has three slides, floor heat, hydro-hot, and much better basement storage.
