Brake Wear Inspection

Hi Folks,

I have looked (while greasing) for a place to observe the remaining thickness of the brake shoes - can't seen to find a location.
Can anyone help?

Fred,

Should be a small hole in the backing plate, with a rubber plug in it. It's not very big, so bring a good flashlight.

How long do shoes last? Someone said 150k miles. When are the shoes wornout? I don't think I have seen a post where a coach owner had their shoes replaced.

Hi Fred -

FWIW, I had mine in a local truck shop at 70K miles because I "figured it was time". The shop owner checked them and told me to come back at 150K miles for pads. Said I was at 80%.

Also my clearence lights are fading I know there was some notes about replacements, any info on this? Thank you

Hi Gary,

I use Halvoline Crimson (pn 70124) - NAPA should have it. I use a 6 foot hose connected to a Sears heavy duty long handle grease gun with a needle tip on the other end. My wife does the pumping and I do the squirming and holding.

My clearance lights are faded also - intend to get red and yellow bulbs from Flying J. Why replace the lense covers if they are going to just fade again?

My lenses not only faded they got very britle. Maybe they don't all do this but I cracked one and broke another in 2 pieces just washing the rig. I replaced them all.

I replaced all my lenses too. I found replacement lenses at a truck supply store in Rapid City, SD. Cost was about $0.70 per lens. The new lenses are a differnet brand but seem to fit the fixture perfectly. After 18 months, still no sign of fading or cracking.

I purchased the whole light expecting the originals to be 'gone by'.
The originals are cheapies but they were OK. I got the new ones at the RV Shack in Livingston, TX on Rt 59 but I think they are a pretty standard items in the RV catalogs. The old ones are imports by KII and I bought Bargman #34-59-002 and -001 (amber and red). Came complete with body, socket, lamp and lens. They were $4.00 each so you may want to go for the lens only if the rest is OK.

I replaced a couple of whole lights then just replaced the bulb and the lens on the rest of them. I saved the rest of the light for future use. I didn't use sealer on the lenses. They fit real tight.

I just order some of the marker lights from CC. They are $.65 each for either the red or amber. I have a few that the base of light is deteriorating. I noticed it when I took the lens off to clean them. For that price I am going to replace all of them. I also ordered some replacement docking and porch lights at $3.27 each.

I just checked the brakes on my intrigue this weekend. I removed the rear wheels and removed the brake drums. I wanted to clean everything and really check things out. All was good so cleaned it up and put it back together. it took about 5 hours and the brake drums are VERY heavy, so keep that in mind if you do this. Have 72,000 and brake linings looked very good. I use the pacbrake alot.
