Cell phone amplifier & antenna

I just completed installation of a Wilson cell phone signal booster and roof mounted antenna. Beware of free advice but if you are so inclined to do the same job just let me know---I don't charge much.

HI Lyle,

Why did you choose Wilson?

What frequencies does it support and what is the db gain? Fred Kovol

Fred,

Wilson because it was recommended. called the number on their web site and they wanted $254 for the amplifier, antennas etc. extra.
Called Prime Cellular (ad in FMCA mag) and they were on sale for $182 plus antenna etc. Don't know db gain but they claim 3 watts out which is apparantly a regulated maximum. It is a dual band, 800 and 1500 (I Think) because different cells may use either of the bands and they don't tell you which is employed. Hope this answers your questions.

Lyle: Are you happy with the amplifier and its enhanced reception? If so, the $182 is a good price for the amplifier. I presume the antenna will cost another $50. About 10-15% discount overall.
I bought the Wilson Roof Mount Cellular Antenna alone at the last CC Reunion for about $50 plus another $10 for an adapter for our Verizon cell phone. For Portability I've mounted it on a heavy breadboard and added 1" vinyl "legs" for nonskid and allows room for the wire to exit at the base.

Fred: Here's the info on the Wilson antenna wrapper.
1. Works on all cellphones; 800 and 1900mhz (analog + digital).
2. 10-15dB Gain
3. No ground required.

They're available at all truck fuel stops.

Also, we bought a small cellphone antenna at Radio Shack ($32 + $10 for the phone adapter) which we use alot with Verizon's extended network internet as well as reducing dropped calls. I have no info on its specs, claims, etc. Its small, CONVENIENT, and has pleasantly surprised us. It sits in the window trim next to the coach window and usually adds 2-3 bars to the phone's signal strength. We will also take this antenna with us in the toad while exploring, etc. In fact, I'm using it now as we sit in Borrego Springs, Ca. BTW, A great desert flower blooming this year per the rains.

Don,

All I can say at this point is that I am very pleased with the insatllation, (pat myself on the back). Very clean, no mess or wires running around. But, your point of portability for the toad is a good one and an advantage I won't have. An operational test will come in a couple of weeks when we plan a trip to southern Utah. Your prices are right in line with Prime Cellular and a bit less than elsewhere.
