inverter problems/tv

Yahoo Message Number: 18865
I have 2006 Inspire that we are having problems with the electrical system. I have modified the front TV so that it can be operated while driving. Now I know this is against the law, but if you travel with grandkids and they need to be amused on those long days, you understand the importance of this mod. I am sure there are thousands of the same modifications out there.
Anyway back to the problem. My front TV, a Panasonic HD 32" unit shuts off after a period of time while driving. The time it shuts down varies, but it usually takes about 1-3 hours. I had the factory check the output of the inverter, after many calls and pleading, and found that the inverter voltage spikes to 128 volts, thats when the TV shuts down. Seems that there is a built in voltage protector for the TV circuit. This is all due to the inverter being a modified sine wave unit. All other models of Country Coach use Pure Sine wave units.
My question to all is has anyone else experienced this problem. I have changed the inverter out to a brand new one from the factory and it still has the same problem. Thanks for the input.

We have the large tv up front also and have kids. They watch tv in the bedroom while traveling. Maybe your modification to avoid the tv lock out while driving has changed the circuitry somehow?

Hi JJ,

The only way you can tell if your inverter is over voltaging is to use an oscilloscope to observe the waveshape and its magnitude. The peaks run about 160 volts. I have posted a detailed writeup about 2 years ago. Using a normal digital multimeter which is not a true rms meter, the voltage will read about 104 vac. A true rms meter will read somewhere between 117 and 122 vac. New scopes give a true rms digital reading in addition to displaying the waveshape.

I had the CC factory technicians check all of the circuitry and it is working fine. I don't want to have the grandkids in the rear without seat belts, too risky. I have modified this in my past coaches (5) with no difficulty.

The CC factory tech's did that and it was over voltage spikes that are causing the TV to shut down. Any HD type TV is very sensitive to voltage spikes. According to the Panasonic technical unit, this TV is not supposed to be used with a modified sine wave inverter. This appears to be the problem.

jjakenancy????

I met a fellow at the class reunion that had the same problem. He had disabled his front TV by cutting or disconnecting the 12vdc lead into the lock out box and it worked fine for about 3-4 hours. Sounds like that's you!!! Hi. I thought you had figured that the 120V through the lock out relay was the problem and that you got it fixed. What happened?

This is a difficult discussion....should you have the TV on in the front while driving (you never look at the tv while driving right?) or should the kids (or any people) stay in the back without seat belts? None of us actually walk back and make a sandwich or go to bathroom while traveling, right?

I am sure folks will point out many stories about people not buckled in that have had grave consequences, but if that is the issue it seems there are greater issues to deal with other than if someone is buckled or not in these situations given the large size of these beasts.

That was me, I spent another 6 days with the tech's and we finally found the problem. Voltage spikes from the inverter. They agreed that it was the problem, arranged to have one sent to my dealer, couldn't put it in at the factory because they were to busy. I just got it installed to day and guess what, same problem. I am going nuts. Thanks for writing and hope to see you at the next rally.

Hi Jake,

Consider two approaches.
1. Expensive - install a sine wave inverter.
2. Cheap - install a spike filter. Start with Radio Shack, the more
expensive 6 outlet strips have filters, the Ham radio folks use them extensively. Click on these links:

They may be your best bet.

A spike filter will only work for very short voltage trancients, microseconds, like during a lightening strike. Depends upon what your inverter is doing. YOu can also buy voltage monitors that will trip and light an LED for overvoltage or undervoltage conditions.
Not real expensive but they don't solve the problem.

You might get by with a voltage conditioner. We use Sola units on our machines. They basically store energy in the windings of a transformer and will take 85 to 130 volts in, and give a pretty clean, harmonically neutralized 120 volts out. They will tolerate short interuptions in power also, several cycles. Email me if you want some more help here, I might even have one laying around I could ship to you to try (you pay shipping).

This may not be a practical solution depending upon the current required, as large ones get very hot. I would get the blessing of the inverter mfg before adding anything however.

Maybe its a heat buildup problem in the TV ????

Well all of the solutions would probably work, but I have just paid a large sum of money for a nes state of the art Country Coach and I feel that this problem should be addressed by CC. This is the only coach in the line that uses a modified sinewave inverter. The warranty on the TV is very specific about voltage spikes and states it will not honor any warranty due to this situation.
I am looking for other owners who have experience this situation or would like to be able to use the in-motion system as designed, while traveling.

Interesting to see how CC handles your problem. My neighbor just dumped his Inspire ... got tired of the fighting with CC.

Absolutely feel your pain about spending a lot of money only to find something does not work. I can only add that you need to be persistent with CCI if you want resolution.

We got to some resolution on a large towing issue but it took many months and many phone calls. We are now in the middle of battling an issue with the leveling system that is going on three weeks of down time. Our previous down time for the engine and towing issue was 5 weeks. Add that to our current down time and 2 months of the 6 months we have owned this coach has been down time. That is 1/3 of the time for those that are not counting....

So while I feel your pain at least you can use your coach. We have missed three trips so far that were planned because we could not use our coach. Not having a TV while driving is annoying, but not critical.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the norm with any of the brands of RV's. Fight keeping it on the road and fight the manufacturer of the coach as well as the components. The price of the unit does not seem to be in the equation at all. We feel your pain, been there/ done that! Waiting on our new '05 Allure and hoping we don't have the same issues as with our SOB. We'll probably just change one set of problems for others.

I's amazing that CC can keep finding people who will spend around a 1/4 million bucks to buy their products and then stand still for having some of the problems they have which in many cases actually render the units unusable. You may not be and that is a good thing, however apparently there are many out there who won't or don't object to problems that border on the ridiculous and it is not just CC although many pay a premium for a product they believe is superior only to have the same problems that the owner of an entry level pusher has.
Smart rv consumers NEVER buy a brand new coach. ;-) Ron 98 Allure 30185

I like this, very interesting. So if people were smart they would never buy a new coach. Then there would never be any used coaches and furthermore there would never be any companies producing coaches because they would go out of business (or never start up int he first place).

I understand your logic, but used coaches have their own pitfalls to say the least.....

Opps, should have explained that... SOB= Some Other Brand. We use that on the forum I'm on for our present coach, which we are trading in for the Allure.

Sue, Can't figure out where you got the 1254 number. If it is a new Allure the number should be about 313XX?

It is new, but an '05 that had not sold, hence the # 31254. Sorry I dropped the 3 and wrote out Allure. The dealer and CC had good incentives to get rid of last years products, so we took them up on the offer. We've toured CC facilities, seen them at shows and on dealers lots, but have not seen this one in person, only in pix so hopefully we made the right decision. We are headed to the dealer Sunday. Had to get back to our winter home to unload the present coach and get it ready to trade in. This will make switching much easier... not so much junk!

We may be making the assumption that the smart people are the ones who can afford the new coaches and do buy them and if this isn't the case then the manufacturers will also be able to sniff out the market and keep exploiting it, besides maybe there are too many coach manufacturers out there today anyway? Regarding Pitfalls, True but the pitfalls with the used are much easier to sniff out and maybe expectations are not quite the same either? I'm in the process of buying a 2003 CC Lexa 45' triple slide with a suggested list of $707K and a used retail of 532K plus an "opening book of $413K for $300K. I'm buying this not for myself because I cannot afford it but for resale for another dealer. This is a coach with 20,000 miles on it and like new. This kind of a deal tells me something although I'm not sure what?
