Dead Short

I discovered a blown fuse in the under dash fuse compartment whild correcting a brake light problem. It was only a 5A fuse in a slot plainly marked 20 (it blew a new 20A too) for black wire #134 and yellow #245. The CC schematic shows 134 for the hot water circulation pump and 245 for the air dryer heater element. I have a dead short in this circuit. The pump motor tests ok to the best of my ability to check. I can't find where the "air dryer heater element" is. The manual says between the frame rails on the driver's side. What air does this heat, the main air from the engine compressor or what? There is the small air dryer in the front bay ? I assume that's for the aux leveling pump in the same bay and there sure aren't any big wires leading to any of those devices. I'm lost on this one.

Any help/advice will be appreciated.

Hi Bo,

Glad you use the schematics before you ask questions.
There are 3 possibilities.
1.The pump is failed - apply power locally to check it out.
2.The Bendix air dryer is under the rear axle and drys the air for the brake and leveling systems - it has a thermostat which turns on the heater below 40 deg F.
3.Wiring.

Consider this approach: Disconnect wiring at the pump and air dryer and check for a short to ground.

Thanks Fred, electricity is "FM" (frigging magic) to me in most cases. Luckily I have a good neighbor who knows wiring. We had already checked the pump motor for a short and that looked good but I think we'll apply power to the unplugged lead to the pump and make sure it runs. The big problem we were having is finding the air dryer. It ain't where the CC book says it is - once we find that - guess we'll perform the same procedure b4 we start the random parts replacement approach - that could get expensive in a hurry.
Also, my brake lights and cruise disconnect weren't working. The 20A fuse was blown - I replaced and promptly blew another as soon as the brake was depressed. CC tech support tells me there should be no ground wire leading from one of the yellow #52 wire terminals on one of the two switches connected in series. Well, we disconnected the ground and now have brake lights and no blown fuse - HOWEVER - the schematics show there should be a ground wire connected to this terminal but should include a 47ohm 5 watt resistor which mine did not (bought the coach used & can't swear the brake lights ever worked). Any additional thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Hi BO,

I can't help you on this one. Your schematics should apply. If a 5w resistor is shown - install it. You will need to find out what that resistor is used for - ask the CC tech.

Thanks Fred, Well it was both - a bad pump motor and Bendix heater. Had to order the heater but just replaced the pump, installed the 20A fuse, it holds and the pump runs like a champ. Just took a shower to get rid of the remnants of my anti freeze bath - I'm sore in places I don't even have places. At 63 I still feel like I can do things I could @ 23 (till I've done them).
