Roof Painting/Clearcoating revisited...especially places near Eugen

Yahoo Message Number: 19344
Our 2001 Intrigue is nearing the time to have the roof painted and clearcoated to allow the 'side clearcoating' to remain 'attached.' We'll be in the Eugene-Bend area for several months this winter (yeah, we know...it's SOUTH in the Winter, North in the Summer, but we occasionally get it mixed up!) and we'd like to perhaps get it done then. I remember some postings indicating that folks had their roof painted so that the clear coat would stick to the roof which allows the side clearcoat to not peel off at that roofline.

If anyone has had it done in the OR area by someone they could recommend, please let us know.

We know about the Paint Department in SO. CA which is another option for another time.

Also, we're currently in Phoenix, so that could be an option too...

Thanks...

Jan,

If you wax the roof on a regular basis with a UV protectant like 303 your clear coat will not come off. The clear coat comes off from chaulking which you can see on the sides of the coach. It looks like black streeking only it is white.

Thanks Bill, but we've religiously used 303 on a very regular basis since buying the coach in 2001 (every 3 months at least). We believe in a "stitch in time" and it looks like now is the time to do the "stitch" to keep the clearcoat from peeling down the sides...still OK, but the roof now needs some maintenance...sealing around stuff up there, replacing the frig vent which seems to be deteriorating (plastic), etc.

I remember some folks last year posted experiences of having the roof painted and then clearcoated with a lot of success. Hope they can post here.

Bill,

I am a little uneducated on this topic, so I have a few dumb questions.
What is 303 exactly. Who makes it? Where can I get it? and How often should I use it?

Thanks,

Kevin

I did a little search for 303 products on the web this morning and I found their website. I am curious about which 303 products people are using on their roof and the application technique. Also, are any of the other products being used elsewhere on the coaches with any success.
I tried to find a retailer in my area but there are none. I guess I will buy it online. Does anybody sell this stuff at any of the RV shows or rallies.

Thanks for the response

303 is available at Camping World.
The instructions for application are on the container and are pretty simple.

We have used it on previous coaches and it works well to keep the chaulking down and prolong the life of the roof.

Jan,

We did our coach in early 2003 in Sacramento. The job was the brow section. Painted and clearcoat. Looks fine three years later. We used a truck paint shop that also did work for the local RV dealers.

Now have to go back and do the top edges like your project. Small amounts of peeling at various locations on top.

Sorry, I cannot help you with vendors in Eugene.

We get our 303 products at Camping World or via their catalog. We also use their 303 product made for fabric to recondition and waterproof our awnings once a year or so...it takes about 4 bottles of the spray though, so make sure you have enough on hand! You might get a trigger finger too, so don't plan to do them all in one day! We do the big one one day, then the others another. It does a good job for us.

Last year we had a fence jump out and bite three bay doors on the passenger side. Ouch!!

When we were in JC I had Guaranty RV give me a bid for the repair and paint. They gave me a bid of $4500.00 Ouch again!!

Larry Sherwood at Country Coach mention a fellow that was in the Country Coach paint shop, but left to start up his own shop. In fact, Country Coach uses him for repaint when doing the electrolysis repair.
To make a long story short, I ask him for a bid and he side $1200.00.
He did the repair and paint job for us and he did a great job. He even touched up a couple of places that had tree sap.

I hope that helps.
