M&G Braking system

Yahoo Message Number: 19503
ALL, I have changed my 'TOAD' to a Honda Pilot. I have used the 'BrakeBuddy' for the braking system in the past, but would like to go with a system that is less hassle.

If anyone could help, I have a few questions; 1] is the M&G system a 'do-it-yourself' install? 2] anyone use it on a Honda Pilot? 3] is the M&G system the easiest system to use? 4] Any other info I need to know? 5] is the 'breakaway' system a must? it appears to be more difficult to install than the braking system.
Thanks for the help, and if anyone could add to the list of 'need to know' please do so.

Larry,

we have an 05 Odyssey and had the M&G sytem installed at Hitch Pro and Tow in Eugene, Or. We had the brake-away added because in some states it is required. You could call Ken at Hitch Pro and he could probably tell you how easy or how hard it is to install on the Pilot. His number is 541-434-2403.

Larry,

I am using the M&G and have been completely satisfied with it. I bought mine directly from the company who makes them, in Athens tx. I believe, and had them install it. Since it is necessary to cut an airline on the MH and in my case make an alteration in my battery box, I would not have wanted to install it myself. We have been very satisfied and for the cost...about $850 installed we think it was a bargain. All that is necessary is to plug a quick connect airline into the car and one the back of the MH. Installation took the shop on 30 minutes.

Larry,

Last time I checked you could not use the M&G on the Pilot but I suggest you call M&G in Athens, TX. They manufacture the necessary components for each model of car and may have designed one for the Pilot by now. I installed my second M&G myself but that was only after I watched the factory boys do it on my first toad. Love the system. It is trouble free, works great and is a no hassle hook-up.

Hi Larry

I have had a M&G tow brake on my Jeep for the past 7 years and over 100K miles, by far the best system out there if you have already air brakes in my opinion. So easy to hook up and get going compared to many others.

As to doing it yourself, it depends how handy you are, I am not very comfortable with working on brakes. With many of these jobs, once you have done one or helped do one it is no problem. But doing the first one by yourself can be difficult. You will need a snap on type air fitting on your back bumper coming off your coach brake line and the male side on your car, as well as fitting the M&G unit on your Pilot's master cylinder.

Make sure if you do it yourself you block up under the chassis before going underneath to mess with the air line. Sounds dumb, but at the homecoming rally a few years ago one of the techs got a very nasty squeeze for not doing just that.

I do not have a break away, just good cables. My Jeep came unhitched once several years ago on the freeway when the pin somehow came out of the receiver, I managed to get off onto the shoulder without any damage. On reflection some kind of breakaway might have been worse.

Hope this helps,

Larry, I've had the M&G system for about three years and love the convenience of it, although next time I will have the air hose hookup on the passenger side to get away from the electrical hookup---it gets kind of " tangly" with both on the same side. Mine was installed by a M&G factory tech at a rally, so I can't comment on the " do it yourself " question. I believe there is a calibration to do so the toad brakes apply in unison with the coach brakes. I th9ink mine is a little bit off as I have heard the toad skidding in loose gravel.
I don't have the breakaway feature, but will on my next toad. I don't anticipate needing it but have heard of toads breaking away and would hate to kill someone when there is a device available to stop the toad.

Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with the M&G system.

Larry, the M&G will work fine on the Pilot however the shock tower bracing hs to be "rebuilt", generally the M&G is pro install only . A good shade tree could do the job.
