SOS! service recommendations

Yahoo Message Number: 19538
Hi all,

I need a service facility recommendation on my route. I have a problem with my Webasto furnace with it overheating the coolant so I will need to have coolant removed, lines blown and flushed out ( to remove scale/crud etc.) so I need good reliable coach service facility between Ashland, VA and Savannah GA if possible, down the I-95 corridor, also including the Myrtle Beach area. Any suggestions from personal experience or knowledge appreciated.( I know about Lazy Days... trying to avoid that and get it done before I get down to FL...)

Does anyone know if Ken Robertson's RV in Lakeland, FL still in Business?( in case I cannot find a facility sooner...)

Heat pumps don't cut it in this weather.... brrrrrrrr... miss my furnace!!!

Thanks!

We had bad service at the Kenly, NC Coach Care facility (Cummins dealer) so I don't ever plan to go to that one again. I've heard good reports on Plemmons RV World in Rural Hall, NC....think that is near Winston Salem.

-My Hurricane heater kept overheating the fluid like your Webasto and it turned out to be a bad circulator pump. Apparently the fluid couldn't circulate and the stationary fluid overheated and it shut down. Got good tech support from Steve at Hurricane. You might want to check the pump. Good luck.

Larry,

I just had my pumps replaced last spring/summer, but it is still possible something failed. My furnace did shut down, I reset it and it was working so well it was boiling the coolant in the lines! But it did not shut down this time.I could hear the bubbling sound when I stood in the bathroom area and noticed an odor. It caused a terrible acrid burnt smell that I assume is coming from the hoses. I have not been using the furnace since I discovered this, but when I drove it was smelling so bad I had to open my vent window for fresh air. I can still smell it when I open the bathroom cabinet that is near the heat exchanger.

Did you experience this problem with the smell?

By the way, I never know what to call this except my "Webasto (hydronic) furnace," because it just heats and circulates the standard engine coolant through heat exchangers which is different from the new ones. So is it a Hurricane or Aqua Hot or what? It is not in any box like the new models... the diesel fired unit is just situated in my service bay.

Thanks for your reply.

I did not get a foul smell as you described. I think that your unit should have shut down before it got that hot. Per Hurricane recommendations, I installed an updated circuit board under warranty in Nov 2004. I wonder if this updated board was needed to shut down the system ealier than previous board allowed. You should call the manufacturer of your heater. If it is Hurricane, they provided me great support. They will ask you for the number off your board which is located in the bay inside small (8"X12"X3") silver box. At least mine is. Good luck.

I fixed it myself. I have many years of aircraft maintenance experience in the Air Force, so I'm used to fixing things like that.
It wasn't too difficult, but required some determination and a lot of grunting trying to get those hose off and back on again. I had to change the pump located inside the unit which looks much more difficult than the one located up front under the coach. In my coach, this front pump is the one that comes on to assist the other pump to operate the heater. Good luck!

Rosemary,

I think you might have two problems. First you might have loose diodes which makes the pumps run when the outside air temperature is warm i.e. 50's plus but went the temp drops, connection breaks down and the pumps fail. I changed many components before I figured this one out. The diodes are in the silver box in the front bay where your second pump is located. Second, I think your over temp sensor has failed.

Ken,

Thanks for the info. It sounds like you ahve had several issues with this furnace too. I will check into those diodes, that I was not aware of. I am aware of that over temp sensor and that could also be a part of this problem. I just had those replaced last summer. I have some spare sensors, but I am not sure if that is one of them.
This makes it even more important that I find someone who knows what they are doing, so I may have to wait until I get to Florida to get it fixed... bummer. I love this furnace, but it is a pain...

I am going to contact Vehicle Systems Inc, now that I finally determined this is NOT a Hurricane or Hydro Hot or whatever... It is simply a Webasto as I thought. Too many kinds of furnaces...

Thanks again!
