Travel in Oregon (Part 2)

I would like thank all the folks who responded to my questions about travel along the Columbia River. I really appreciate it and received great ideas and things to watch out for. Now for a slightly different question - we were planning to make our trip in August (thinking that the tourist activity would be decreasing as all the kiddos get ready to go back to school). However, we can just as easily do the trip in September, mid-August to Mid-September, etc. (I have a month of vacation left but no hard dictate as to when). Would we still be in relatively good weather but less crowding if we delayed? If so, when would you suggest travelling?

If you have a choice, definitely take the September timeline. Schools in Oregon usually begin after Labor Day and we have found September and October to be wonderful travel seasons for farmer's markets specializing in pears, squash, late tomatoes and especially apples.
Although the wild mountain blackberries along all the roadways are mostly gone in August, you can still find a few late bearing ones near river banks on the North side of mountains. Yes, on second and third thought, travel Oregon in September. It is best for salmon, too. Be sure to stop at the Triangle Oyster Farm at Winchester Bay for fresh oysters. Yes, definitely September.

We have a home on the Columbia River in which we live summer through fall. I most definitely would take your trip in September rather than August, which is a very busy time in the northwest. Septembers and Octobers are two of the most beautiful months in the Columbia Gorge and weather it typically good (however, this is the NW. . .it can even rain in August).

By the way, Highway 14 on the Washington side is a prettier and more relaxing drive than the I-84. Parts of it are twisty, but I've comfortably driven our coach on it several times.

Lots of kiddies don't start school until after Labor Day. Summer starts about July 4th in Oregon and is nice until about mid October. I'd sure choose sometime after Labor Day!
