Battery Boost/Charge Solenoid

Unfortunately, on some CC models the Battery Boost/Charge solenoid is underrated for the output of the alternator. Overtime the solenoid contacts will either weld close or be so burnt they will not pass any charge current. Depending on your coach model, you can check if your house batteries are charging fairly simply. With the engine running, select Amps or "A" on your Heart Interface Panel and select Battery 2 which should be your "House Battery." If you see a negative reading, your house batteries are not charging. You can select "Battery 1", and see how much charge current is going into your chassis batteries.
If you select Volts or "V" and switch from Battery 1 to Battery 2 both should read close to 13.5-13.8 volts.
If you have a less sophisticated Heart Panel, you should see a 13.5V or 14V reading on the panel with the engine running.
I doubt if the oil pressure switch is bad, I have seen only burnt solenoid contacts. The replacement solenoid has the same footprint as the original, but has a rating of 200A; more than adequate for a 160A Leece Neville alternator.

With the above troubleshooting hint, you can select Batt 2, "A" and then push the "Boost Switch." If your house batteries charge, the solenoid is working, and your oil pressure sending unit is bad, or there is a wiring problem.

I have rambled enough, if someone needs more help- Post. I have had this problem with three different coaches.

Fred,

I got a new solenoid in to replace the old battery/boost relay. But it looks different

from the old one and the posts are situated differently. How do I hook the wires for
this new one?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Kic,

Your replacement solenoid should have the following:
1. be a 4 terminal type (insulated), 2 large for
attaching the large cables (2g red from alternator, 2g red from chassis disconnect and red/yel (small wire) from echo charger to one of the two large stud terminals and 2/0 red and red (small wire) to the other large terminal) - see wiring diagram S0699 foldout and S0478 in ops manual) and 2 small for connecting up the small wires (wires 24A 16g blu and 178 16g blk to one of the small stud terminals and wires from the diodes connected to the other stud terminal as shown in the diagram) and 2. be rated at 200A continuous duty (coil must be continuous duty).
Napa does have an ST36 which may do the job, but I would have Country Coach parts advise you on a 200A replacement solenoid.

You must have the wiring diagrams to do this job and note how the existing wires are connected to the old solenoid.
