New owner of CC Allure

Yahoo Message Number: 1917
Hello

I am new to this list and wish to find as much as I can about CC Allure. Especially the 2000 40ft with 330hp ISC and Power Tech 8KW genset and Galley slide.
I have made an offer and it was accepted about an hour ago by Lazy Days in Tampa. Coach does not look lived in and has 23,410 miles on it with 226 hours on the genset. I have until tomorrow to say yes or no. It has many options that list out in the NADA book at $175k total retail and $131k wholesale. My offer was $138K and it was accepted.

My question is that if (likely will since better half likes it) I complete the deal, what are some of the things I should try to or insist on being included in the PDI and corrected? Are there any major problems that need to be concerned about. I have been reading the posts and have picked up on a few things here on this site. Of course I am at only post number 478 out of over 1900. So I have a ways to go yet to read all of them. I thought maybe some of you out there could give me a quick list of inputs.

Were are new to a diesel coach and this large of a unit. Was have rented and belonged to a coach club where we had 35 footers (gas). We have been looking for that perfect used diesel coach since last August and I hope we have found it. Wife and I are about to retire from government service within the next 12-18 months after 70 years of combined service. We want to do extend trips in retirement. No full time. We like the home port as well. Of course, you never know.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi, Jim and Barbara,

I hope things work out for your purchase and you are happy with the coach. Based on the odometer reading I would insist on changing the rear axle oil as well as the transmission. These were probably done at 5,000 miles and will be due again at 30,000 and are expensive items. These are in addition to oil change, lube and changing all filters except the air filter which are normally done at the initial PDI.

Front end alignment is another item to negotiate for, although a good ook at the tires will prety much tell you if there is an alignment problem. The rest is to just be sure everything works and get a thorough walkthrough from the dealership.

Congrats on your pending purchase of a 2000 Allure. We have had ours a little over two years in March, have made two trips across country, from Washington State to Florida and from Florida back to Washington State, taking a month for each trip. We have just under 23,000 miles. There are no major problems with the Coach, just wanted to offer a few suggestions.
Make sure dash air works, we had some problems with that. I suggest that you make sure all the Country Coach recall work was done if applicable, such as the air valve weight distribution system (ours was one of those that needed it because of to much weight on the front end, it was built in the first half of the 2000 production year). On your walk through, make sure all interior drawers move smoothly. We have had some broken tracks in the large drawers under the pantry.

Hi Jim & Barbara,

If you are making the final decision tomorrow there isn't much time for you to learn about your (possible) new coach.

If you read this I would strongly suggest the following.

Go to the dealer right now and acquire the Allure coach number, the engine serial number, the date of manufacture and the size and make of the front tires.

Call CC and request they advise of any recall items by CC relating to that particular coach that have not been rectified.

If the tire size on the front are smaller than the 01, 02 or 03 Allure models ask them very specifically whether those tires on your coach have been or need to be replaced under a recall notice.

Call a Cummins service center and determine if that particular engine has a recall on the air compressor.

If this dealer was the original selling dealer, ask them to provide all available service, repair orders for your inspection.

NOTE: The dealer and his/her salesperson may not be aware of outstanding recalls and if the original owner failed to have them corrected they may come back and bite you.

If your dealer is a good one, they will help you with this research.

Should you discover any outstanding items you should make correction a condition of purchase to be complete before the money changes hands.

Also, CC does not always have an answer on items like engine recall. You must contact a Cummins service center.

I in no way want to rain on your parade, just want to make sure you get the coach in the condition is should be.

FYI I discovered only by chance that our air compressor was not replaced by the original owner. CC didn't have a record of this but Cummins did. Cummins replaced the compressor, at no cost.

Good luck.

Congrats on your new purchase.
1. One on the things I would want to consider is (sorry, I don't know the year of your coach) the brand of the shocks. In 96-01 many of the Allures did not use Koni shocks (red in color). They have been on all newer ones since. The blue Monroe shocks were very light weight, and could not carry the stress and pressure the front end of the coach causes.
2. The 12R tires would be another item to consider. (Again the weight of the front-end)
3. And of course, changing the oil and filters of the engine AND geni.
Good luck, it's a great coach.

Thanks Dave. I had already did what you had suggested before even making the offer. I took digital photos of every decal, serial number and then made calls to Cummins, Allison, and CC for any service bulletins and recalls. I also checked the NHTSA web site and found service bulletins and recalls listed there. I think I have identified most of the major items of concern and made it part of my proposal to the dealer (Lazy Days). Which they accepted. I also talked to the previous owner and he advised me that all the work had already been done by CC and Cummins. So I will let Lazy Days verify it was done properly with the on-site factory reps. Also, having all scheduled maintenance zero baselined so that filters, fluids and such are changed.

I guess I am trying to find anything I may have missed and hopefully have it included in the PDI later this week. This is sure a great site and hopefully I will be able to offer some good input.

Thanks you for the response.

Congratulations again. Sounds like you have done your homework. Yes, this Internet thing is a big help. I first learned of the compressor recall on a different bulletin board before even owning our CC but was a bit surprised to find CC didn't keep any records on recalls not effecting their part of the construction.

At the very least I would have thought that Cummins would have provided them with a list of serial numbers so they could respond to owners making queries.

We were lucky. Went to a Cummins shop for a baseline service (just as you are doing) and it was the Cummins tech who checked and advised us of the recall. They scheduled the change sequentially with our service so we lost the minimum amount of time.

So far we are well pleased with our first CC. Have visited the factory and had a few minor things done by the service department there, also met some nice people in the visitors lounge. If you get to Oregon you might want to do the same thing.

Hope you have as much fun as we are having.

Hello Jim,

Just wanted to drop a note to you about the Allure. We have a '99 36ft.(no slide) and have put 42000 miles on it since December of '98.
Love the coach!!! Yes, we had minor problems but nothing major.
One item that I think you should inquire about, is the oil blow-bye problem that has been a problem with the Cummins engine. Also have them replace the oil pressure sensor. If it goes out you will have a total shut down of the engine. It is not a pricy item, but can be very frustrating. The mechanic that replaced ours told us that Cummins had quite a few of the sensors go bad.
As Carl mentioned-- have a good look at all of the drawers and make sure that none are broken. I have replaced several in our coach.
Just wanted to give you my experience with the coach. Oh by the way, will be in Jacksonville the weekend of June 7 & 8th.

Good Luck,

Thanks Dave

Sounds like I am headed for some real fun and enjoyment. The wife and I have been planning this for a long time to do extended trips in a nice coach once we retire. That time is only 12-18 months away. I figure with us retiring at age 55, we still have allot of miles left in us.

Over the years I have tried to keep up with the changes in the construction of the different manufacturers. It still boils down to that you get what you pay for. I just never thought I would be paying more for a vehicle than I originally paid for my house 25 years ago.

You are right about the different manufacturers of the various components of the coach. Each one is only concerned about their own rice bowl. You would think that a high end coach company like CC would keep tabs on the various effects on service bulletins and recalls from the various manufacturers. I guess it is overwhelming enough just to keep tabs on the various configuration records on the coach part. I have to admit they are good on that part.

I have allot of work to get this thing set up the way I want it. I want to drive it without towing anything until I get used to handling it. Not intimidated by it at all. Used to drive a truck part time when I was in college and it has been awhile (1986) since I have driven a class A. Then it was a 34 footer, not 40ft. I am a ham radio operator and plan to install some of my equipment in it. Wife is already trying to decide where we can go during the long 4th of July weekend. Well, I hope we will meet up some where down the road someday.

Best of everything....
