Actual MPG by Country Coach Model & Year

We owned an American Eagle, 1996, back before the days of no slide outs. Sold it after 2.5 years of full timing - had a great time! Averaged 9.7 mpg with it but it was substantially lighter than the units now with slides.

Looking seriously at getting another coach to travel while keeping a home base. Looking seriously at a used Country Coach as we heard good comments about them when we were full timing.
Concerns are naturally the escalating cost of diesel and how it would impact our budget and capacity to enjoy traveling.
I would appreciate input on what folks are actually getting for MPG, by model and year of coach, number of slides and if you have a vehicle in tow.

Appreciate your comments and suggestions.

We have 2002 42' Magna, with 2 slides, we get over all average of 7.5 mpg, we are 40,000 lb plus a Honda, which is 3,000 lbs.
Now I am not a speed person, I like to drive about 60 to 62 mph, get the best mileage at this.

'01 Intrigue---1 slide---350 ISC Cummins. September trip to the East coast. 2550 miles---238 gallons of fuel. 1/2 Interstate driving w/cruise set @ 60 MPH and 1/2 thru the White and Green Mts. and coastal, stop and go thru every little town. 10.7 mpg for the trip. Better mileage than some big pick-ps.

Based on the terrain, weather conditions and my gas pedal we get anywhere between 6.5 and 8 mpg. We have a 2006 Country Coach Inspire Sienna 36' quad slide with the 400 cat and almost always towing a jeep wrangler. We love our coach!!! Just food for thought on expenses is look at the prices on hotels lately as well as eating out all the time.
Yes it's more restrictive but what a life.

When we were on the Focus group two years ago we were told Caterpillar engines got 1 to 1.5 mpg less fuel mileage than an equivalent Cummins. I assume they were talking about the 2 different 400 hp engines at the time. We have traveled with folks with a 370 that is 36' and we are a 400 at 42' weighing about 44,500. In the Southeast, Texas and NM we were within 5% of each other at any speed under 65. But in the mountains such as the Grape vine, Colorado, Northern Calif. and Oregon they had 10 to 20% better mileage. If we stay at around 63 /64 we usually average in the 8's, but can hit low 9's. At 60 and below 9's are a 50/50 chance. Recently running 73 from Junction Texas to El Paso the mileage was 7.1. So speed is a big determining factor as is the wind. Wind under 10mph 8 mpg is easy, but with wind in the 30+ range 7.2 at any speed is about it. Our old 36' Allure with the small tires was under geared and turned to many rpm's. But below 60 to 55 we could get 11 on the flat. Above 68 the mileage dropped down into the low 7+ range. But from 60 to 63, 9.3 was quite common. We weighed at about.34,000 with toad going down the road. Now Hydro hot heating is more costly to operate THAN propane, but is quieter and the system is more versatile than propane systems. We have the diesel generator that has 3 speeds and it consumes less fuel than our Power tech generator did and is much quieter.
The question for us has always been is comfort, quality, and strength of construction being more important than the fuel mileage of the lighter weight coaches with the aluminum House and bay superstructure such as Western Alpine and Holiday Rambler. As we have gotten older and don't have to travel watching the calendar, we have learned to slow down and smell the roses. This has brought our avg daily fuel costs way down. Last Year our average costs for fuel and rv space was $45.60, this year it was about $48.25, but we spent 4 weeks in California and that can be expensive. With the 20% increase in fuel prices, that would push us up to about $54.00 a day. But if your real sharp and use discounts whenever possible and stay for a week at a time you can usually get a day free and save dollars.. We didn't do this the last half of our trip this year and really pushed up the overhead.
Also, carry a computer with you and use it to research fuel prices, it's easy to save 10 to 20% from what's prevalent in the area.

The last time I weighed the coach it weighed in at about 38,000 lbs if I add the 700 lbs for the motorcycle and the 350 lbs for the motorcycle carrier it brings me to about 39,000 lbs. I have two slides a tag axle and a Cummins 370 ISL and according to my Silver Leaf I've averaged over the last 5 years about 7 MPG. This includes the use of the diesel generator, heating and hot water heater.

I am driving a 97 Affinity pulling a 1500 chevy 4x4 with a harley in the back. That is about 6000lb that I am pulling with a 37,500lb coach. I usually get about 9mpg. I have a c12 cat with a 4060 allison. I have got as high as 10 and as low as 8.1 under the worst conditions. Going to Alaska I averaged it over 11,000mi, a lot of it poor driving conditions, and still got 8.7, so that is what I usually plan on. I do better than 8.7 in the lower 48.

Does Silverleaf calculate the generator usuage too? I always suspected it did but coudn't figure out how the generator fuel usage went through the Cummins ECM. But, when the Silverleaf said I used X gallons, that's how many gallons the tank took, even after using the gen on the road. Thanks

Wow - some good data so far - thanks for the imput and please keep it coming.

Over the last several months I've build an Excel spreadsheet where I try to analyse the true cost of ownership for travel style alternatives; car+trailer verse Coach+Toad verse car+hotels.
The spreadsheet has two major sections. Top section compares the cost of a trip fuel and lodging/campground. The lower section compares cost of trips by the above but also incorporated cost of ownership - initial capital investment, depreciation, fuel, insurance, lodging/campgrounds.

I have posted the Excel file to the Files section of this forum. If you plug in your own factors, the results are very interesting to compare. File is titled "Trip Cost Calculator.xls".

Of course, all decisions are not based on the economics alone and this is not factored into my spreadsheet. Just wanted it to represent the cost of ownership in a fairly honest form leaving out the Lust Factor of owning any favored form of travel style.

I have a 2003 Allure 36' two slides for sell. It gets about 7.5 with a tow. Unit is exceptionally clean.

Sorry I made a dumb mistake. I can't believe I included the generator and heating fuel usage with Silverleaf. I should have first checked my mileage and fuel spreadsheet before typing my comments. Having said that I agree with Don's comment that Silverleaf does not measure the generator fuel usage nor does it measure the Hurricane fuel usage. Your question and Don's subsequent response made me look back at my mileage and fuel usage spreadsheet for 2006 and 2007. In the last 6 months of 2006 I averaged about 6.3 MPG. In 2007 I averaged
6.6 MPG.

Just finished calculating our recent 12,415 mile trip through the Maritimes and east coast. We have a 2006 40' Inspire, triple slide, 400 Cat and tow a Honda Pilot. Also have BMW motorcycle on the rear of the coach. For the entire trip we averaged 7.3 MPG and paid an average of $3.21 per gal. This takes into consideration the conversion of Canadian liters to gallons. I subscribe to the old saying " if you are worried about the MPG in a motorhome, don't buy one".

We've got a 1998 CC Prevost conversion (bought new). 40' XL no slides. We have usually pulled a 2001 Chevy Duramax Diesel 2500HD extended cab pickup, I am always 10+ over the posted speed limit. THe engine is a Detroit Series 60 putting out 475hp thru an Allison 6 speed auto. We installed the Silverleaf and since it interfaces with the Detroit computer I have access to the Detroit information on one of my screens. It seems that in the 9+ years and some 55,000+ miles Detroit tells me that I have used 6.9 - 7.0 mpg (varies back and forth between the two on long trips). Now considering that the motorhome fully loaded with full water (160 gal) and fuel (250 gal) weighs in around 47,500#+ and the pickup is 6700# I've never been unhappy with the mpg. We do keep a "manual" log and that of course does not accurately consider the fuel for the Webasto heating system and the generator (the hour meter tells me hours but at what load I don't know) but that one also, considering some "fudge factors" for heater and generator time comes in in the 6.5+ gpm. So, I'm happy to report that I travel in the high 6 mpg range.

Our '02 Magna with C12 Cat towing a Jeep Wrangler averaged 7.3 MPG this past summer on a trip from Florida to Calf-Nev-Utah and back to Fla.
That was running the Generator both roof and dash air conditioning [90-100 degree outside temps]. Mileage was just under 6k round trip and was calculated not using the Silverleaf. Thought that was good for average driving of 65 mph.
