TRW recall campaign POR-FC-01-01

Yahoo Message Number: 2184
I just today received a safety recall notice from TRW that affects my 2000 Country Coach Intrigue #11040. This might affect others in the group. Here is a part of the text from the recall notice:

TRW has determined a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in some steering linkage supplies to Holland Neway facility located in Holland, Mi. Material was used by Holland Neway to create Independent Front Suspension units for Country Coach Manufacturer of Motor Homes. Some of these vehicles are equipped with IFS units (#90546282) containing TRW 24 DL design component assemblies manufactured and sold to Neway from July 14, 1999 through July 25, 1999.

What the issue is: Some TRW 24-DL rod assemblies may separate due to premature wear in some applications. If the TRW 24-DL assemblies were to separate, there could be a loss of vehicle steering control in some applications.

TRW recommends that the suspect TRW 24-DL component assemblies be replaced.

TRW asks customers to:

Identify suspect part manufacturer and date codes: Inspect your vehicle to verify that the component part manufacturer, "TRW", is listed on either end of the socket assembly.
If it does not say TRW then it is not included in this campaign.
Verify the rod end date codes. The 24 size ball-sockets affected by this campaign contain date codes on the socket end cap as listed below.

9G2 or 9G3

Other date codes are not included in the suspect population and should not be replaced.

I have just inspected mine and find that they are 9G2 so now will have to find a place to do the replacement effort.

Hi,

You've got my attention as my coach is near to yours in sequence. Is it easy to see the identification marks without putting coach on rack?

It is easy to see it if you can see things up close....lol The way I was able to do it was to crawl under the coach by the front wheels and use my digital camera to take a picture of it then I was able to read it. Unfortunately my trifocals were not able to focus well enough at the close distance so the camera did the trick. I had to first wipe off some grease to be able to take the picture then it was very readable. I also called TRW 800 number and he told me to find a place that I wanted the repair made at and he would ship the parts to them. TRW covers the labor and parts.

Thanks Ray, good idea about the camera. I had Lasik surgery on both eyes. Can now see distance without glasses for the first time in my life. Now l need reading glasses for close up work that I didn;t need before.

For me the surgery was a big big benefit. Wish it had been around when I was twenty, as I would have become a commercial pilot.

I always get the replacement parts sent to me so I am sure I have them when I go to the repair shop.

Ray,

I am perhaps the worst mechanic in the world, but I continue to learn bit by bit.

This past weekend I got into the front wheel well area of our 2000 Intrigue (#10963, very close to your number) and tried to find the 9G2 or 9G3 numbers for the TRW recall. I didn't find anything that would help ... in part because I didn't know what I was looking for. Can you (or someone) describe in more detail what the "socket assembly" looks like, where I will find it and where I will find the number (if mine is included).

Thanks,
Art

Yes, art, glad to try and help. Look for the steering system. They look like a bar with each end connected with threaded couplers. These couplers are where you will find the numbers. If I can get the pictures from my camera into this site maybe I will post them for you to see but the name TRW is stamped on the bottom of round steering rod ends...you can see these by looking directly up while lying on the ground next to your wheels...maybe about a foot from the wheel.
The TRW and the numbers are not easy to read and you will probably need to wipe off some grime from the surface to see the numbers. I had to use my digital camera to take pictures of them in order to read them because my glasses do not allow me to focus on something that close ...I know, get new glasses....lol....and I intend to when I get around to it...

Let me know if you want pictures, I will try to get them posted on here.

Hi. I have only owned my Allure 2000 for 11 days now so really cannot help you as to how to find the numbers...However, if you contact Country Coach tech services: service@... and give them your VIN and coach # I am pretty sure that they can tell you if you are affected by the recall. FWIW.

Art,

I have added a photo on the yahoo country coach site where you can see the item circled that has the part number. Take a look at that and let me know if you need additional assistance. The title on the photo is TRW Recall.
