News Updates: Story

Four people, including two juveniles, were killed Wednesday evening in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of West 11th Avenue and Bertelsen Road in west Eugene.
A fifth person, also a juvenile, sustained injuries believed to be life-threatening and was taken to a local hospital, Eugene police spokeswoman Melinda Kletzok said at the crash scene.
The four who were killed and the seriously injured juvenile were all occupants of a silver Toyota Highlander that collided with a red Isuzu Rodeo.
The 24-year-old driver of the Isuzu was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The Isuzu had no other passengers.
The accident occurred at around 9:16 p.m. Alcohol may have been a contributing factor, Kletzok said.
The scene was a grim one even to veteran investigators.
"This is a really bad one,"? Kletzok said. "It's a very sad occurrence."? A few minutes before midnight, police had still not removed all of the bodies from the Highlander, which had struck a utility pole. A utility truck with a ladder had arrived in an effort to stabilize the pole before removing the bodies.
West 11th Avenue was expected to remain closed indefinitely as the accident scene investigation continued. It's possible that the arterial could still be closed early today, affecting the morning commute, Kletzok said. Motorists are advised to avoid the intersection until further notice.
Kletzok said Wednesday night that the victims had not been identified, and it was unknown if they were all members of the same family. The two dead juveniles appeared to be young teens, she said. The juvenile with critical injuries appeared to be an older teen, she said.
The intersection is along the commercial portion of West 11th and is controlled by a four-way signal.
