Coach Vibration

I have a vibration in the coach that starts at 62MPH and goes away at 65-67 MPH. Last month, while at the factory the coach was taken to Les Schwab where the front tires were remounted and balanced, same results. Another trip to Schwab and the fronts were taken off again and one tire was replaced, both tires rebalanced, same problem. This time the factory service manager took a drive and said it was in the rear. Back to Schwab and the rear tires were remounted after replacing two tires and a steel wheel plus balancing all four assemblies. This time the vibe is worse. We did not have time to stick around so they could put it on the dyno sometime during the next week.

I have thought about ride height, drive shaft balance, and alignment.
Does anyone have any other ideas and has anyone had the same problem?

Don,

We had a 2000 Intrigue that had the same problem and it was the drive shaft balance. You didn't feel the vibration in the wheel you felt it in your body.
Took it to a truck shop that did that kind of work and they balanced it once to within truch tolerance and then they balanced it again to almost perfect.
The vibration went away and CCI paid for the work under our coach warranty.

My cousin had the exact same condition on another make coach. He went though tires, wheels, drive shaft, etc. Turned out it was the rear end gears, I think it was an Eaton rear end. He traded it off and the rear end failed 200 miles later. Luckily the new owner had extended waranty and it was covered but it was in the shop for weeks. I hope this is not your problem but it sure sounds like it. jerry in NM, '00 Magna.

Thanks to everyone for all the info. My thoughts are on the drive shaft, sure hope it isn't the rear end. Kind of hard to believe as the coach has only 15,000 miles on it. If I can't get it resolved here in Southern CA, I guess another trip to the mother ship is in order.

I'm dealing with a similar vibration issue. I believe my vibration is now sourced to the the backlash in the rearend. I only feel it at 62+ MPH when I'm coasting. It is worse once the rear end gets warmed up. If I'm coasting at 65MPH I feel the vibration, but once I step on the throttle, the vibration goes away. My mechanic installed much heavier oil in the rearend and the problem got MUCH better. He also said that the only other fix was to rebuild the rearend and add some shims to take out the backlash.
I thought that it was the driveline. Although I have not ruled out a poorly balanced driveline, the mechanic could not find any looks CV joints, etc., in the driveline to contribute to the problem.

Hi, Keeping the tires balanced on these rigs with dual rear wheels can sometimes be a frustrating ordeal. I used to have the same type problem until I went to Walker Tire Co. in Austin, TX where they told me to use the same balancing technique as the 18 wheelers use. That is, to put a designated amount (based on the tire size) of a commercially marketed beaded-powder (I think it's called "Equate" or something similar) into the tire when mounting them. The powder gravitates to the correct placement inside the tire according to the imbalance while rotating. This will constantly maintain the accurate balancing of the tire at all speeds and throughout the wear cycle of the tire, provided of course that you maintain correct and equal pressures on the inside & outside rear tires. It cost me about $20 per tire but was worth the added expense ten times over. I haven't had any vibrations in the 30,000+ miles since the installation. Hope this helps.

PS. I have this stuff in all six tires (front and rear).

The only caution I will offer is you can not use TireSafe or any other pressure and temp monitor inside your tire when you go this route, or so I have been told by the manufactures. I use the same powder and it does keep the tires balanced.

I have the powder (or chrystals as the tire shop people call it) in my front tires and the smart tire works fine. I was advised that the powder goes to the outer circumference of the tires wheas the smarttire monitor is strapped to the rim. Also, the newer powder does not clump with moisture, at least that's what I'm told.

I'm not sure about Smart Tire but I know Camping World will not install TireSafe if you are using equate. Unfortunately, they did not indicated that untill I had driven 400 miles to have it installed. I would check with the manufacture before proceeding.

Mike, I had the chrystals installed right here in Texarkana, Ar/Tx at State Line Tire. I should mention that I had it installed without even thinking of the possible SmartTire effect, and I immediately called Schwab in Junction City and was told there would be no problem due to centrifugal force moving the material to the outer part of the tires whereas the SmartTire sensors are strapped to the wheel. So far, no problemos.
