We are having a chech engine light come on..pulling a grade under warmer weather ( Vail Pass)..Lost power / engine shut off and pulled to the side of the road! Remove tow vehicle and drove on
Cummins is saying it is a design flaw in the Exhaust and they want to wrap with a insulatation tape...Has any one else had this problem?

You should have them check the charge air cooler, if this is leaking can cause the eng to overheat and crack the manifold and worse cause a turbo failure. I am in the Cummins coach care Normal, IL now because of a charge air cooler leaking. It caused the manifold to crack. The Cummins shop can run a pressure test without removing the cooler. Any one that is having a heating problem, slight loss of power and fuel mileage, have the charge air cooler checked.

Symptoms of non-performing charge air coolers:

Loss of engine power

increased fuel consumption
exhaust manifold failure

premature piston, ring and valve failure elevated coolant temperatures
turbocharger failure

Much cheaper to have the pressure test made before any of this happens. We have 82,000 plus miles on this coach. The cracked manifold was found on a normal engine service. I had not noted any problems with power, heat or fuel consumption. However, the crack in the manifold was very visible. The men in the shop wanted to know why the manifold had cracked so they performed the pressure test.
They tell me after have the new air cooler installed I should experience a slight power increase and a little increase in mileage. Maybe as much as .5 per mile. Time will tell.

Be aware there is a design flaw in our exhaust system installed by Country Coach....Cummins in Denver caught this problem as it is running to hot and needs a heat shield on this ehaust......CC will not do anything to assist on this and we are on our own! Under warmer weather pulling a grade with a tow vehicle on back your check engine light will come on. Cummins is getting parts installed but said it is a CC flaw in the installation & design...Shame on CC not standing behind this issue...

Lonnie, do I take this to mean this is a problem for Country Coaches with Cummins engines or all Country Coaches? If Cummins engines only, would this apply to specific or all Cummins engines?

Lee, at this time Cummins said this is the worst installation they have ever seen! We own a 2007 Allure 430...

Lonnie, I am speculating that when you say that Cummins says it is bad, that you really mean a technician at a Cummins facility is saying that. Is my speculation correct?

I think this overheating is more likely associated with the fan speed problem than the exhaust.

This is the note sent out about overheating for the 07 Allure it most likely applies to your rig Jim

I just completed a 2yr saga of overheating with my 07 allure 470. I am happy to say that the problem has been solved, I may be able to help. My overheating occurred during any ambient temp situation over 75 degrees and climbing any type of grade. The problem was miss diagnosed by a number of shops and lots of dollars. The bottom line is it came from the factory with a fan that would run 1800 rpm at max engine speed. The bypass in the hydraulic fan motor was the problem once the spring pressure was set right in the fan motor it now runs at 2800 rpm and everything works fine. Recently at 95 coming across the Nevada desert I could climb most hills without gearing down however I found that I could the engine below 215 degrees if I kept the RPM above 2000. Call me directly if you more onfo Cell 925 78 4385

Very happy to say overheating solved, it is a design problem as I previously mentioned and I would be happy to walk you through it.
