We recently also changed out the Directv HD (non-HD of course) receiver and replaced with an HD/DVR unit. Haven't yet done the fan thing. Also then added a wi-fi system in and around the coach. This allowed us to use the On Demand feature of the HD/DVR although we never have. The lap top is nice though to take outside and use.
Doing all this created an issue as you recognize with the RTI remote. I don't know how to set it up with new and changed components and already had used three of the Harmony 890 and one of the Harmony 1100 remotes. We really like these and they are easily programmed. I use an 890 for the front system and now keep the RTI in the bedroom for that system.

You'll definitely want to add a fan as the DVR will get quite warm. You can check the temp from the menu (if DirecTV) and before we added a fan it was reading about 120, after the fan abotu 106 which is actually slightly less than the DVR reads in our house.
We decided that rather than mess with the RTI and also the uniqueness of the Jamo that we would upgrade the system instead. That way we won't be facing the same dilema if we do a future upgrade.
