Telephone connection

Yahoo Message Number: 3764
We are now at a RV park that has telephone connection at the site and for the first time I decided to connect the coach to the service.
Not easy. My Intrigue has a marine type fitting inside the wet bay and so far I have not found the appropriate cable adapter. Tried Radio Shack, Campers World and an RV supplies shop without any luck.

I did get a part number and suggested retail price of $54 (ouch)
Right now I have strung a fifty foot telephone cable from the service outlet to my computer (through the curb side window) which works but not exactly the way I want to continue.

Did CC supply an adapter as original equipment?
Any suggestions on how you made connections or modifications for phone service would be welcome.

Thanks,

David and Karen,

David and Karen,

My 2000 Allure came with the telephone adapter. It was part of the packet of tools and equipment that included the Allen wrenches for the mirrors and sun visors, air adapter to blow the water lines for winterization, etc. It has the marine plug on one end and the standard telephone jack on the other end. It is about 6 inches in length.

One of the things I did was to obtain an old military ammo box and put all of these items in it. It makes life easier for me to just go to the ammo box when I need a tool that CC supplied. These boxes are relatively water tight and rugged.

David.... How much do you think that you would be willing to pay (me) for one???????
Seriously, it might be more economical to replace the connector with an RJ11.... the industry standard.

Just a thought but that's what I would do.

What I want to know is---why didn't they just use a regular plug like everybody else does? Is this adapter an outdated thing or a new more modern up to date one???

I did get the adapter with my used Allure. Ask your dealer and see if they will cough one up...If not I have an extra one which I could sell. Mike.

It looks to me like one of the design engineers owns a boat. The plumbing bay is dry enough to use a standard modular plug/receptacle.

I believe Coutry Coach should go a step further as the RV Parks become more modern and every new laptop has a network connection.
Networking connection (uses RJ45 with 4 pair)) should be provided in the bay, as well as a regular 2 pair RJ11 connection.

I am at Emerald Desert RV Park in Palm Desert where I have a cable modem connection (1.8 mbps download!) for $29.95/month with no long term commitment. Modem is in bay, and I had to run network wiring into the coach by drilling holes. I believe more parks will be providing network connections in the future.

Also, was at beautiful new RV park by Lake Tahoe which had TWO telephone connections at each site with preassigned phone numbers.
These were already on and available at every site -- one for in/out calls, the other for outbound (e.g., computer) calls only. (This was not a long term stay park). A standard 2-pair RJ11 (in the bay and inside coach) with a L1/L2 coupler from Radio Shack would have been better than the marine connector.
Another 10 years, it won't be "modem friendly" but "network friendy" RV parks. The clubhouses should provide network connections or even wireless (Wi-Fi 802.11). Starbucks is starting to provide it around the country! Just takes ONE DSL/Cable connection and a LinkSys Wireless Router for $99 (which would provide the clubhouse with 4 wired and unlimited number of wireless connections) for their customers!

I say let's go Wi-Fi! Campgrounds could (and someday will) install wireless networking and rent PCMCIA NICs. Some day coach builders will have an option for built in wireless connections.

Slap, slap. Wake up, Dick. You're dreaming again!

David & Karen,

I went to West Marine web site and found what I believe to be the needed adaptor for $44.99. What part # did you have? I too bought used & didn't get an adaptor. I haven't needed it as I only use cellular.

I am surprised at the price. I picked up one @ "Boat US" for 17.99. You should also purchase the cover which is $7.99. While I have seen them in other other boat accessory chains I not look at the price. I have attached a copy of BoatUS online page showing the telephone plugs. Their site is http://www.boatus-store.com/icatalog you can simply search for "telephone".
By the way I have found that the boat accessory chains have a lot of high quality components that can be used in CC's at very reasonable prices.

Hope it helps.
Joey

It is a Marinco socket. Very high quality marine socket. You will find them on boats ranging from $100M to $2,000M in price. I suspect this is because it is located in the "wet" bin.

Hi Joey,

Thanks for the information. At a RV parts house the sales person gave me the following information:

Coast Marine Catalogue part # 72137 phone adapter female $57.95.
I am now back home and connected like regular people so have some time to determine which "fix" I will use for the coach. Thanks all for the varius suggestions.
For full timers stopping several weeks at a time in one spot, connecting to the phone and cable in the wet bay may not be a big issue but when traveling with shorter stays I disllike the location. I was particularly frustrated by the cable connection but as we now have a working self seeking dish I rarely connect to cable.
Has CC improved this situation of the First Editions or do we have to wait until 2007? GGG

My Magna has an external MARINCO telephone connector.
The $24.00 adaptor I purchased, came with only a six foot cable. When this six footer was used with an extension for longe distance hook-ups, the dual connection was exposed to the elements and the weather wreaked havoc on the tiny gold-colored contacts. They turn green & black, collect dirt, etc. This will short out your phone connection with a deluge of static and no dial tone. To avoid this, I used a 50 foot extension and re-wired it into the weather-proof MARINCO connector. (Careful to use the correctly colored wires, only three are used) Presto! No more corrosion problems and I can reach more remote phone jacks.
