Hydro-Heat

I noticed people talking about these units. We have a 2003 Intrigue that we purchased used.
After we closed the deal we were told the electric was not working for the hyrdo heat. That it needed parts and wasn't worth the effort.
We ordered the parts and went "home" from California to Connecticut.
We received 2 coils and paid someone to install these at the cost of $500.00. When we try to get hot water from electric we manage to get about 2 cups b/4 the water gets COLD again. We have been using diesel to heat our water which is a pain..... We have been told thats all your supposed to get when using electric. Does this make sense? Never did to me...why bother? We previously had a 2000 Intrigue and that set up was AMAZING....Heat and hot water from the engine going down the road!!!! Not with this one...no heat unless we turn on the furnace. Are we using the system correctly? Why would CC go backwards with the heating system? Paul Eno

Sounds to me like you still have a HydoHot system problem . . . it's still not 'right.' My unit operates just like you described from your 2000 coach. I suggest you contact Roger Berke. He knows ALOT about these systems.

Paul, sounds like you had a Hurricane in your 2000 coach. Different system. It uses engine coolant and has a loop from the engine through the Hurricane to heat your coach when driving, as you say. Very clever. You also probably had had a 10 gal. Atwood gas/electric water heater. The Hurricane also has a heat exchanger loop through that water heater, which works whenever the furnace (or engine heat) is circulating. Of course, it is not endless hot water like the Hydro Hot but in mine it gets hot enough to burn you in the shower. I believe some Hurricanes came also with an electric heat option but I have heard it never worked very well. I have never had a Hydro Hot, but the Hurricane system is the most efficient (including the burner).

Just FWIW, the two electric heating elements on our Hurricane unit work very well. We can get a decent shower out of them in warm weather and get good furnace heat at 35F. Haven't tried it at a lower temp. We did have an initial problem where the electric elements did not work and through Hurricane tech support over the phone, we isolated it to a bad thermister. Since we have changed the thermister, we are very happy with the electric side of the Hurricane furnace and hot water system.

Friend, In Denver, CO "Cherry Creek St. Part", this October we had daily temps of 18 degrees, our Hurricane kept us plenty warm.
