Coach Vibration Revisited

A couple of months ago I ask if anyone had vibrations in their coach at certain speeds. I told about all the times Les Schwab balanced the fronts and the rears. I ran out of time at JC so came home. CC sent me to Colton Truck Terminal Garage in Colton. The first visit was again limited on time and all they did was verify the balance of the tires. A return trip yesterday was made where again they checked balance. They left the tires on the coach and used a machine to spin the tires up to road speed. Guess what? At approx 65 MPH you could see the tire go out of round, it went crazy even though it was in perfect balance. They replaced the tire and now the coach is now as smooth as a new babys rear end and quieter too. They did in three hours what Schwab couldn't do in two days. This was all covered by warranty.

Their rates for service are good for the Southern CA area.

Engine oil, oil filter, primary and secondary fuel filters, coolant filter, checking all fluid levels, adjusting the brake slack adjusters, and lube chassis for the ISC engine is $250.00
Allison 3000 series trans filters and fill with Transynd is $415.00; $200.00 for Dextron.

I am so happy to have a "new" coach I had to tell someone and give Colton a plug.

I second that. Colton Truck is great. The have worked on our coach and are the guys who fabricated a shield that directs the radiator fan blast horizontal rather than directly down, thus eliminating the Desert Storm appearance.

Hi Don,

Just for the record, are you writing about just the front two tires (if so were both bad or just one side) or the whole six or eight? What brand were the tires and were they replaced with the same?
I have an older six wheeler with TOYO tires and no sign of vibration.

My coach is shod with 12R22.5 Toyos, no tag. Problem was the left front going out of round at road speeds 62-65 MPH. The severity of the vibration was getting worse with increased mileage.

Here is what happened during my tire saga.
1. Schwab removed, remounted and balanced front tires, no change
2. S removed fronts, installed new right front and rebalanced both.
No change
3. S removed the rears and replaced the left steel wheel and one tire, I don't remember which and balanced both. No change.
4. S removed the rears again, remounted the insides, rebalanced the
insides. Changed a tire on the right rear outside, remounted the other side and balanced the outsides. No change.
Seeing as how there wasn't any change in the coach, it would be safe to say there was nothing wrong with the tires they took off. The only way they could have found the problem would have been for them to spin the tires up to road speeds. The balance machine Schwab uses probably spins tires up in the neighborhood of 30 or so rpm.

They tried talking me into installing this balancing powder stuff saying that would cure the problem. My question to them was, if you can balance with weights, why do I need this magic powder. They couldn't give an answer.

I ask what they do with the take off tires. Was told that Toyo doesn't want them back so they sell them to truckers for a couple of hundred bucks. What a way to double your profits.

Another interesting thing is that the paperwork at Schwab said the tire cost $473. The cost from Pete's Road Service in Colton was $371.

It appears that you might have something to do with CC current position on fixing the desert storm problem. Kevin C at CC told me that they now have available baffles to fix the desert storm problem.
Will not provide them as a campaign or recall but will sell them to anyone who wants them. I've had this problem since day one of ownership of the coach (bought new in January 2000), I identified this problem to CC and to each service center I visited. None could come up with a solution, most told me the problem was a universal problem with CC and there was no fix. Now, that I am out of warranty CC will sell me baffles....go figure.

Thanks for the input. Very interesting. I wonder if CC is giving Colton Truck a commission on this?
I think, that since you've been complaining about this to CC and they have a record of it, that they can be pushed to pick up some, if not all of the cost to install the baffle.
