Hot Water Heater intake leak

I have the 10 gal Atwood Hot water heater (model GCH 10) that can be heated electrically or with propane. While heating the water this morning with propane, after 20 minutes, the cold water fitting into the hot water tank gave way...major spray!
There is a blue labeled plastic pipe that connects to a 2 inch metal cylindrical protrusion from the hot water tank. The water is spraying from the fitting connecting the two. Has any one had this problem and if so:

1.   How was it corrected?
2.   Any problems or is it pretty straight forward?
3.   What was determined to have caused the problem?

If it is the same as the failure we had that is the backflow check valve to keep ho water from getting into the cold system. They are available at any HOME depot/Lowes, etc.
Shut off the supply to the hot water heater, remove the broken.leaking piece, take to the hardware store.
These split easily. Hope yours is as easy to fix as ours was - except drying everything up. The plumbing hardware used here is standard and not RV specific - or should be.

Thanks Bob,

With a limited capacity for changing light bulbs only, I have a call in to the mobile RV repairman. However thank you, at least I have an idea of the scope of the job. Turn heating source off, dump water from hot water tank, unscrew fixture, remove check valve, go to home depot?. put it all back together. Fortunately we were able to turn off the pump before the tsunami.
