Ignition switch failure

Yahoo Message Number: 63286
Hello all, we just got back from a 1400 mile trip, and the ignition switch failed twice. Just driving down the road, and the coach just quit. I managed to get to the side, and fooled with the switch to get the coach started again. It seems like a dead spot in the switch. Has anyone else had this happen, and if so, how did you get the switch off to replace it?

Thank you,
Doug

Hi Doug

On my Magna to remove the ignition switch. I had to reach up behind the dash and unplug the wire harness. Then grasp the switch and turn it while using a screwdriver on the ring to hold it in place. The ignition switch unscrewed on the back side off the dash.

After you get the switch out check for continuity on the different terminals. If the terminals check out then you might have a solenoid problem.

Hope this helps.

Doug,

How many additional keys are on the key ring with the ignition key? Most switches wear out when to many keys (too much weight bouncing around causing premature switch wear) are on the key ring.

Thanks Paul, I only have the ignition key in the switch. So, something else has happened.

Thanks Bo, I will try that, I have gotten the front ring to turn, but then it just got to a point and just spun. I also feel that it is the switch because I replace the solenoid last fall, and it continued. I also feel that it is the switch because when it happens, I don't have any of the dash gauges working either. It is just like when you turn the switch to off. Very perplexing and not much fun at 60 mph. OBTW, you also loose power steering, so all you can do is coast to the side gently.

Thanks,
Doug

Are you aware that there is two solenoids, One for the ignition and one for the starter? If you replaced the starter. Then you might be having trouble with the ignition solenoid.

John Davis posted a message on Ignition solenoid on January 26 2010. Subject line Ignition solenoid.

Hope this helps.

Bo,

Thanks, I did not know there were two solenoids. I checked the schematics and found the ignition solenoid. It is in front of the passenger in that compartment. I will change it out and see if that solves the problem. It seems easier to change than the ignition switch at this time, not to mention that the failure is the same effect.

Thank for the valuable help...

Bo,

Thanks for the suggestion. I changed out the ignition solenoid, and that did the trick.

Thanks again,
