Texas Laws

Yahoo Message Number: 63740

I have a question about motor vehicle laws in Texas. I just spoke with a dealer there and was informed that Texas State law requires them to replace tires older than 5 years before a vehicle can be resold. Which will decrease the value of my coach by at least the cost of new tires.
Can someone confirm this?

Hi Tom:

I can't find a darn thing on it and I would expect there to be numerous references to any such law all over the internet.
I am suspicious that this business may be trying to take advantage of what they consider any easy target and buy your rig for less than it's worth.
The latest recommendations for tire replacement I have seen (it was in the last few months of Motorhome magazine I believe) was to examine at 5, consider replacement at 7 depending on conditoon, replace at 10 regradless.
I would take your rig to a big name truck tire store and have your current tires inspected and the condition written up by the store. If you are set on using that dealer show them the opinion of the experts. If there is no such law, and I believe that is the case at this point, I wouldn't even leave my coach there and go to lunch. The big name store would know about any law as well.

Sounds fishy to me too. But, maybe they stepped in it - if they want to sell you that vehicle, they will have to put new tires on it for you. First I have heard of it. You can check with Texas Dept of Public Safety web site for all the rules and regs.

I have a friend that just bought a used rig about 15 years old---had the original tires on it. I did convince her to replace them!!

I would not buy a coach with 5 year old tires unless I got an allowance for new tires of MY choosing.

THe issue was the dealer was trying to give him a lower trade in because TX law required the dealer to replace 5 yo tires. They are claiming this is the law.
As far as anyone can tell that is b you know what. Just trying to give him less than the coach is worth using a lie.

I'd find another dealer.

Worst price you'll get is trying to sell to a dealer.

I was very suspicious about this "law". I'm not scared of the tires we have, just wanted to confirm or deny this "law"
