Tetford toilet

I have tried everything to try and get the toilet to hod water. Has anyone had this problem and what is the fix?

Often paper can get caught in the blade as it cycles, and you have to clean out the gasket with a q-tip. Silicone spray also helps it work smoothly. There is a kit to replace the valve, seat and actuating mechanism - I fought mine for several months and then just replaced it. It is about a one banana job, not even that messy. I would recommend outlining the commode base with pencil, so you can put it back right where it came out, and the hold down lag screws will fit easily. Kevin Waite (among others) can get the kit for you. Supply them the serial number on a sticker under the front of the bowl.

Since you did not provide the model Thetford toilet or the year and model of your coach, I would have to guess at a solution. If it is an Aria II I can help but otherwise I don't know. Also what do you mean by tried everything?

Buy the Seal Kit at your local RV Parts store! Relpaced mine last year along with the floor flange gasket! Pricy but do it yourself and save. Still have the old plastic white ball. Look at the paperwork on your Tetford! Ken 99 Allure

Turn off the water supply to the toilet. Hold the fluch lever down and keep the ball valve open. Take a pot scrubber and scrub the rubber seal that is around the bottom of the bowl. This will clean any build up on the seal. The build up can cause the bowl to leak down.

Don, I am jumping in here with a question on the Thetford Aria Delux II toilet. When I first bought the toilet and had it installed when flushed it would only take a single quick push on the flush button and it would flush and then put in a few pulses of water for the next flush. Not I have to hold the flush button down in order to completely flush the toilet and it will not put in water for the next flush without pushing the water fill button. What should I check to see if there is a problem I can fix or should I take it to a dealer to have it checked? Thanks, Jim

On the back of mine (face the toilet, on your knees) reach down with your right hand to the back side of the toilet, and you will find a toggle switch. Flip it up (or down, as the case may be). Could be that switch has been hit and now the mechanism may be in the water saver mode.
Another possibility is that the mechanism might be "out of time" - you might reset it by pushing both buttons at a time, and that will open the valve, and keep it open. Do it again, and it will close, and water will flow into the bowl for the next time.
All this is just a guess. A manual can be found on the internet if my blind guesses do not hit the problem.
I replaced the mechanism on mine, as the gears were stripped - about $200 for a replacement, and not a difficult job. If you do remove the unit from your floor, I recommend you put a pencil mark on the floor so it can go back in EXACTLY the same spot, as that will ease replacing the lag bolts that hold it down.

I had the blade and related gaskets replaced last year when water began leaking out of the bowl. My Thetford is an Aria. Solved the problem.

Thanks Jack, I am going out to the RV this weekend and will try your suggestions. I looked at my Thetford toilet manual and it was no help at all on this problem. I will let you know how it goes.

Jack, I am in the RV now in Breckenridge, CO and I do not have a switch in the back of the Thetford toilet as you described. I also tried doing the press both switches at the same time to open the valve to keep it open and that did not work this time even though it has worked in the past. Do you have any other sugestions before I take it to a dealer to fix?

Yes it can be but here is how I find mine. Start at the top of right hand side with your finger touching the back inside edge of the porcelain. Slowly run your finger down the edge of the porcelain until you reach a metal support bracket for the flush mechanism. Run your finger across the bracket finding the screw head that hold the bracket and on to the lower edge of the bracket. The plate that holds the switch and the switch are directly below the bottom edge of the bracket and close to the edge of the porcelain. On mine it is also just about opposite the wire bundle that connects to the toilet.

Took me a while but I now can easily find it every time.

Thanks all, We found that pesky little switch today when we went up to the RV in storage. I could not find it but my wife was able to locate that sucker and it now works like a champ! Thanks again for the info.
