Flying J Merger with Pilot and Impact on us RVers

I have not seen any recent chat in the changes at FJ. We left Branson, MO last Wednesday and will arrive in Scottsdale on Monday, using FJ for diesel all the way. I was told and/or experienced the following, going into effect as of this week.
Truck Island. You can fuel up there as before. Your Real Values Card will no longer work at these islands. You will have to go inside with your credit card, tell then how many dollars of fuel you want, and you'll pay the credit card rate.

RV Island. Apparently Pilot/FJ wants you to fuel up here. Your Real Values Card will get you some kind of discount. Perhaps the cash price, don't know about the additional $0.01 but I got snookered at the truck island so can't report the RV Island situation specifically.

Based on my experience, it looks like I try the RV islands for a while. Hurry up and wait in line . . .

From the pilotlyingj.com web site for the RV Real Value Member Cards:

Card will automatically produce the following fuel discounts at all Pilot and Flying J locations
  • Propane - $0.10
  • Unleaded Fuel (any grade) - $0.02 (100 gallon monthly limit)
  • Diesel - $0.03 (300 gallon monthly limit)
No other purchases are required to obtain these discounts, but they are only available on gas islands or in diesel lanes indicated as RV lanes Cash price in truck diesel lanes will be temporarily discontinued due to technical restraints that should be overcome in the near future

I've done some recent trips using FJ RV islands for fueling and most of them were unchanged from before, discount from cash price even though using a credit card and FJ RV member "frequent user" card.A couple required going in to the cashier before the sale and indicating a maximum dollar amount then when you actually fill up them amount charged is adjusted to reflect what you actually put in so it's a good idea to indicate an initial amount adequate to cover what you expect to put in. Otherwise, the pump will cut off at whatever limit you set and you have to start over if you want to fill up. According to their news letter about the takeover the same conditions will apply to purchases at Pilot.

I think the statement about using the truck islands might be correct. I used one on the trip and the charge was a little higher than I expected.

Another issue no one has mentioned is the fact that this year the TRUCK STOPS consistently have the

highest prices. Get off the main drag and you can find diesel 5 to 10 cents a gallon cheaper. Before,

Flying J was always the most economical 9 times out of 10. Guess they figured out people with large

vehicles really don't have much of a choice and therefore Pilot/Flying J will charge us accordingly. I also learned that TA bought Petro. 2010: 9,800m miles from El Paso, North to Montana, the Northeast, to

Virginia and home.

These changes are going into effect as we chat about it. I understand that Nov 1 is the date all changes should be in place. Also, about 40 FJs are closing as part of the deal so check to confirm your next fuel stop is still open. The website looks to be newly updated.

Hi Lee Z,

FJ has generated a lot of posts on another group I am a member of. Seems that it all depends on if the FJ fuel stop is a company owned or a franchised location. On the truck islands, most FJ's will not accept a credit card at the pump unless it is issued by FJ. Using your credit card at most RV island pumps will max out at $75.00. You have to restart the pump. The FJ Realvalue card will not work at the truck islands. Several calls to FJ headquarters produces the answer that by Jan 1st, all locations will be the same as far as how they operate. One member found out that his FJ card had 5 showers on it.

I have been hanging out in the N. Idaho, Washington area all summer, FJ's fuel is at least 10 to 25 cents more than any other stop for some reason now. I quit using all my FJ cards, and finding much better prices. Seems to me FJ/Pilot, doesn't care too much for the RV business anymore.

I personally much prefer Love's Truck stops. They're always much cleaner. The staff is friendly, helpful and INTELLIGENT. I can leave my credit card with an associate, fuel, then come back and sign the invoice. Their prices are competitive. I will go some distance out of my way just to fuel there.

I never let my credit card leave my eyesight. Pocket scanners about the size of a pack of cigarettes are available. One swipe on a pocket scanner and they have the information on your card to make a duplicate.

I'm not one to change my lifestyle to avoid the one in a million possibility (or even one in a hundred) of fraud. However, I will carefully monitor my credit card accounts on line and catch any fraudulent activity before it gets out of hand. The major credit card processors stand by their customers when fraud occurs.

I had my card used just after a purchase at FJ and it was used to purchase Fuel, in 4 different states in 2 days, 400ea purchase, don't know how they did that, because I could only purchase 150 before going inside. It does make it a little inconvenient when you are traveling to have to cancel your credit card, and wait for another to be issued. I agree with post before, I never leave a good card, I kept my old card so now if I have to leave one I give the one that has been canceled, then exchange when I pay. Of course I have not used a FJ since that time. If I can't pay at the pump I just drive on by..150 gal will go for a while so I just find the right station. Lots of info on where to find fuel now..

That's my experience too at least at Murphy Oil at Walmart. WM is often ten cents cheaper than a truck stop when you figure in the three cent discount you get by using a gift card, and it can be purchased in the store with a credit card. Murphys can be a bit tight, but I do OK with my 33 ft. Allure.
It is also much faster than FJ and other truck stops as you don't have to go back and forth to the fuel desk if they don't have a working card reader.
