noisy toilet

Yahoo Message Number: 65123
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Our toilet is making a loud squealing noise when it opens and shuts. More so when it shuts. I don't have the paperwork for it and don't know how to access the rear to see what maybe wrong. It's worse on mornings that are cold. (About freezing or less). By evening it's ok again. I've looked and can't see any references in the old posts about noisy toilets.
Any clues on what's making the noise and how I can access or fix it.

Thanks.

Bruce,

You didn't say what make your toilet is. I have stopped a similar squealing noise on my Thetford Aria II by manually opening the slider valve and then, while manually closing the valve, spray silicon on the valve plate as it closes. Make sure you use a silicon based spray lubricant as an oil based spray will destroy the rubber gaskets. Worth a try.

Hi Don. I've tried silicon but it made no difference. It's always bad in the mornings and gets better as the day goes on.
I don't like these electronic toilets. They use way too much water for my liking and always have the potential to fail.

Bruce,

Ok then the unit might be getting ready to fail. I had one do that and when it did it failed in the open position. The manual knob would not close it as the worm gear had broken and run right through the front of the lower housing.
Thetford sent me a new operating unit and it was very easy to install. If you get to that point let me know and I will walk you through it.
Again you didn't say if it is an Aria II or not. If it is then it has a water saver switch that will make the flush switch only operate as long as you hold it down. It is the best water saver mode that I have come across. The regular mode with all the water is focused on keeping the bowl clean and does a much better job then the manually operated toilets but it does use more water and likewise more sewer dumping.

Don I'm not sure of what model it is. I'm guessing it's an Aria II. As soon as I get a chance I'll get a service center to pull it out and give it an over haul.

By the way it's worked flawlessly today.

Thanks
