Without Coffee.... HELP?????

Hi everyone,

We have gone through 2 coffeemakers in the last 4 months- 3 in the last 3 years.. and wonder if there is a something in the AC power (we are on shore) that is not compatible? Love any input.

We had a brand new coffee maker quit too. We returned it and got another one same kind. There was an "electronic smell" before it burned out. I found online where it's a common problem with the electronics on coffee makers with timers, especially when you run them off inverter. We now have a Mr. Coffee and solved the problem by unplugging it when we're not on shore power or generator. When we run the generator, we wait and plug it in after the generator is running and unplug it before we power down the generator. Been working great for almost a year.

You may have a square wave inverter, which when in use will destroy many coffee makers, like the GE Spacemaker.
When the coffee maker is not in use, it should be unplugged.
I have gone thru a couple coffee makers myself.

Russ says that they are on shore power. The inverter is not in the picture when on shore power whether it is on or off. Low or high voltage may be the problem.

I had two heating gadgets (space heater, bed warmer) that freaked while on shore power, if I plugged into the circuit with the inverter. When I plugged them directly into shore power, bypassing the inverter, they worked fine.
My experience only, for what it is worth.

Yup you're right, when on shore power the inverter is out of the picture, but what happens when the resort loses power ... the inverter comes on. Guess what else happens ... the next day you get to go out and buy a new coffee maker.
That is why I think unplugging the coffee maker is a good idea when not in use.
I learned this when traveling thru Alaska, where losing power at the resort was a common event.

I see your point but that is why some people do not leave the inverter on. It picks up so fast that on a couple of occasions I didn't realize that I lost power for quite some time. I was engrossed in what I was doing on my PC, which didn't even flinch, so I had run the house batteries down before I realized it. There is no alarm when you lose ac and not much to notice. With the inverter off you will notice it a lot quicker and also less chance of running your batteries down if you are away for the day.
I also have a modified sine wave inverter and ran for 4 years summers on our property in NH on the generator and inverter for 4 months at a time. In my 10 years of full timing I have owned 2 coffee makers. With the first one the pot finally broke, I couldn't find a replacement and it was getting pretty grungy. It did however still work. My replacement is now 3 years old and going strong. Maybe it is the brand of coffee maker Both of mine were Krupps and I own no interest in the company.

Just another angle on it.

The first clue that you get that you lost shore power is hearing generators starting up in the resort.

My resort is a Fish and Wild Life Refuge in the middle of nowhere. No generator but love our 11,000 acre back yard and the sound of nothing.

The power switches over to inverter with no warning and if you're watching TV you don't even get a flicker.

The first clue that you get that you lost shore power is hearing generators starting up in the resort.

Thought we would share our thoughts on using coffee makers. We always unplug our coffee makers when not in use whether it is in the motorhome and/or home. A few years ago we saw a 60 MINUTE PROGRAM on TV which showed a family receiving a new coffee maker for Christmas. They plugged it in that evening and during the night it started a fire and the entire house burned. After testing many coffee makers they found this to be a serious problem when leaving coffee makers plugged in.

Get a coffee press and forget the coffee maker. No need to worry about Inverters.

Boil your water and pour it into the coffee press, follow directions. Better coffee than any coffee maker I've ever used. Best with freshly ground beans of your favorite type of coffee. Might take a tad more time, but well worth it.
Unless you want to get a Keurig or Tassimo and make one cup at a time. Then you'll need to unplug it when not in use to prevent Inverter damage to it, too. ;-)
