Hurricane Heater Fuel Lines

I've searched and found where a couple of you have replaced your dry-rotted fuel line. Did you replace both the supply and return? And were you able to route the lines through the original conduit?
Since the return is (I think) only a vent that goes through a normally closed valve it wouldn't seem to be so important.

As I understand it, the return line is pumping unused fuel back to the tank. When troubleshooting the fuel pump, I removed the return line from the top of the Hurricane, applied 12 volts to the pump and saw fuel pumping into a container. I also once saw fuel leaking from the cracked return line at the tank (W/temp fix). I'm going to change both lines as soon as I determine how much I should spend on the hose. I'm thinking about running/positioning the lines first then connecting them at a later date.

Larry is correct - you should replace both lines. You are in there feeding a line anyway, so do it while you have things apart. No conduit in my coach, just drilled holes which the lines were fed through as they came into contact with crossmembers. Easy job but very time consuming so don't start unless you have ample time to complete the task. 4 hours for me, but then I had to remove the prophane tank to access the top of the fuel tank on my coach - yours may be different. New lines and new filter stopped all my Hurricane operating problems - everything working fine now.

I found this:

"The HURRICANE heater utilizes a low pressure fuel system. The built in fuel pump draws fuel from the fuel tank up to a zero pressure regulator where it stops. An air accumulator is installed inline between the fuel pump and the regulator to trap any air bubbles from passing through the nozzle causing nuisance shutdowns. The accumulated air can be periodically bled off through the bleeder valve. For continuous bleeding, a return line can be run back to the fuel tank."

Trying to find where I read that the valve on the return line is normally closed and only opened to purge air from the fuel system. What I remember reading could itself be wrong.

The ITR tech told me to leave mine 1/4 - 1/2 turn open.

Jerry, my first generator fuel line symptom was that the generator would not run. The supply was rotten and sucking air. A month later the return hose started to leak.
Moral to the story is that if one is rotten the other is likely to be as well. Replace them both.

Update on this too. I had the same shop that had quoted me over $4K in labor to install new carpet install new fuel lines for the hurricane heater and my generator. Boy, oh boy, did they see me coming. They actually subbed the job out and charged me a cool almost one grand.
I had used this shop a couple of times in the past and each time there were a couple of issues when I got my coach back. Those problems I accepted as anomalies since in my research this place was very highly rated. My philosophy had been I wanted to establish a good relationship with a quality service facility and bare the extra associated cost thinking it would be worth it.
After this last go around, I emailed a detailed letter to the company presents describing my experience(s) to which I got a prompt reply from him and a call from the service manager literally begging me to give them another chance. Offered to whatever to get my business back (including an oil change/service), but no way. Done with them.
