Are you freezing your ass off in Montana?
Question, do you get any rubber odors from the hydronic hoses? Or don't you have green ones?

Hey Jon, I don't know about Rich, but I can tell you mine stink! My Hurricane has been running for two days here in the frozen Southeast. 29 this morning in Titusville, FL.

What you my smell is the anti-freeze. The hoses are most likely, silicone. Silicone can allow the coolant smell to seep through. It is hard to tell sometimes what it exactly smells like, may seem like diesel fumes or rubber. The solution is to change the anti-freeze from the normal over the counter stuff to this type:

The Universal Propylene Glycol Antifreeze does not smell like the cheap over the counter stuff. Lesson learned the hard way. Takes awhile for the smell to leave after the change out. Seems some here have mentioned a special anti-freeze for that system.

Although Rich and others smell anti-freeze, I smell rubber and it permeated the entire basement. I use the CAT extended life coolant. I have never smelled coolant. But this is what CC told me when they still provided tech support.
CC recommended new hoses. A Gates blue stripe. Gates guaranteed me that nothing will permeate it's hose.

Yes well, Gates hoses are the fuel hoses for my Hydrohot and generator that are failing. When I replace them, they won't be Gates.

There are different levels of Gates hose. A better hose or belt is hard to find over Gates green stripe products. Gates green stripe is my first choice. I do not know what level the blue stripe is. NAPA sells Gates green stripe products. Green stripe has proven itself over the years of use in the logging industry of the Pacific NW. Green Stripe is more expensive then standard line, but it is the "you get what you pay for".

Jon, smelling rubber is sure not a good thing. Time to find the source and replace the rubber product. It means the rubber is breaking down fast. Look for cracks or hardness of the hose. Loss of flexibility is easy to feel and usually the first sign.

The right silicone hose is also a very good choice as it will last a very long time. Finding the right silicone hose is the problem. Suspect the newer silicone hose is a better product then a few years ago that allows anti-freeze smell to come through.

Thanks for the insight on the Gates hoses Leonard. I don't know much about hoses except my experience. Just so happens, there's a retired Gates sales guy camping right next to me who volunteered to research his sources for the best hose to use. I have a bad taste for Gates right now, but may learn something out of all this. Thanks again.

You have reason to believe that silicon rubber hoses are permeable or porous to antifreeze? If so, we have a problem and we then know the problem. I would imagine that most antifreeze fumes, including extended life are toxic.
Why would CC install or the manufacturer provide rubber hoses to use with antifreeze that are permeable to antifreeze? I would imagine that there are many types of hoses that are not permeable to antifreeze.

Working at local school dist., would walk by some busses and would smell anti-freeze. Asked mechanic and was told it was the smell coming through the silicone hose on those series of busses. Not leaking, just the fumes coming through after a run with hot engines.

When we purchased our 97' changed the cooling system and used Prestone. Had such a strong smell, running the Wabasco, could not stand it. The hoses are solid green, thought they were Gates green hoses. Started to look for leaks, found no leaks but discovered the hoses were silicone. Light bulb goes off. Changed to the Amsoil anti-freeze and the smell is going away. Sure there was some of the Prestone left in the system that has to be worked out. The change made a BIG very noticeable difference in the smell level. From eyes watering, sore throat to hardly any smell at all and keeps getting less and less.

There are several brands of this type of anti-freeze on the market. Just easy for me to find the information quick on the Amsoil site. Remember two things need to be there, silicone hose on the hot water side and standard anti-freeze. It is my understanding that CC used the Propylene Glycol Antifreeze as standard at some point in production. Unless one has very good knowledge of the coach history and have a smell, then time to investigate. And no, I do not think breathing the fumes is healthy at all.

The good side about the silicone hose, they will last as long as the coach, or longer. After looking at mine, sure would hate to have to change them out. The problem with the fumes, I believe, was not a know problem for some time and is not a problem with the correct anti-antifreeze. Silicone hoses are very expensive and CC used the very best hose available at the time.

The change to the correct anti-freeze is not cheap and hard to justify unless one understands why.

i had my green hoses replaced above the floor & no more smell of anti-freeze, i couldn't brathe in the AM after sleeping with that oder. Bob Lee paid the labor & I paid for the parts... bob '02 Magna 6028
