Fuel economy numbers

A 68% increase in fuel mileage? If we just assume that to be true for a minute we can do some quick math.

1. Most recent readily available information on number of 18 wheelers on the road is from Bureau of Transportation for 2002. About 1.2 million trucks
2. A single truck driven 100,000 miles per year at 6+mpg uses about 16,000 gallons of diesel at a current cost of about $50,000.
3. A 68% mileage increase would decrease fuel consumption to 9,500 gallons at a cost of less than $30,000.
4. The savings for this fleet would be about 7.8 billion gallons and over $25 billion dollars per year.
5. The above is just the US and just trucks with 60-80,000 GVWR....diesel trucks are all over the world.
6. An ECM computer chip capable of this transformation would create a demand that would bring major chip makers into the competition and their economy of scale would cause the price of the chip to plummet.
7. Market saturation would take care of itself. The "haves" would own such a competitive advantage that all players would adopt the change or go out of business.
8. The reduction of oil consumption worldwide would have substantial impact on global economics and therefore politics.

So...existing, affordable technology can do this? I'm surprised it hasn't made the news.

I made a trip to Calif from Texas. I told myself, or forced myself to drive slower, 55- 60 mph. Before I was driving in the coach "sweet spot" around 65. I tow a 1 ton van on a custom heavy trailer with all my tools. Lots of weight. At 65, I was averaging 5mpg. At the reduced speed averaged a steady 6 mpg. That is a 20% increase in fuel mileage. Coach weighs 42,000. + trailer/van We are pushing a brick thru the air- not very aero-dynamic.

I bet if you also put a HHO generator on it you would probably have to drain the fuel tank every now and then to keep from spilling diesel all over the place.
