Overheated brakes

Yahoo Message Number: 69134
Twice now (in a year) I have had an overheat warning, from Smart Tire, on the right inside dual. Both times were during heavy brake use. Does the fact that it is the same wheel indicate something might be wrong? All temperatures and air pressures are normal driving down the Interstates.

Temp 185

Air Pressure 130 (from 100 cold, 120 running)

Hi All,

I have had the same thing happen a few times on the twisties. Ours is usually the left inside dual. Our coach has drum brakes and I am certain the heat from braking is heating the wheel as well, and the ST sensor is attached to the wheel. It is my supposition that air currents beneath the rear of the coaches vary from model to model causing the hot air to concentrate in a given area. I wonder what effect removing the rear "rock guard" would have?

In the 13 years I've driven two CC's I have only had a brake heating issue once. The Allure with ISC 330 and an exhaust brake never gave a problem, traveling all over Colorado and the West Coast. The Intrigue with the engine brake just once when the Accumulator section of the injection pump allowed diesel to merge with the crank case oil, thinning it, dropping the oil pressure. Which made the engine brake in effective, causing the drum brakes to overheat   , but I took it easy and never had a tire temp warning. If you have normal oil pressure with an engine brake and or your exhaust brake isn't sticking partially open, I would have the brakes inspected. Which you are supposed to do once a year.

If that wheel always runs hotter, something may not be right. I might have the wheel bearings and/or brake slack adjusters checked.

(This thread seemed similar. So, added to it instead starting a new one.)
Air brakes are new to me. I just got my first temp warning, after a twisty ride with combo Jake brake on high, and needing to also use the service brakes to slow down for curves. Heavier then normal, as I had 3/4 full black, 1/2 full grey, 1/2 full water, and between 3/4 and full fuel.
Temp on left outside, read either 185 or 189 (can't recall). At first, I thought it was a pressure warning, and pulled over and checked all the tires with a heat reading gun. All seemed to be in norm. So, I continued on home, about 25 miles. I stopped one more time, around 10 miles from home, and still all tire temps seemed normal. The temp gauge dropped down to 169.
Today I drove it about two miles round trip, to dump the tanks. When I got home, I checked the temps, and Smarttire read the left outside, as about 10 degrees warmer then the right outside rear.
I know nothing about air brakes. I do plan to go into a our yearly cycle of maintenance (first time after the full PDI prep when we bought the coach). I plan to take it to Colton Trucks, about 110 miles from our home.
Concerned about a brake problem, and damaging something, from driving this far. What would you recommend I look at, before taking this trip? Anything I can grease, or make sure is adjusted properly, before heading out. (I'm pretty good at tapping things with a hammer:)!)
While on brakes, a second question, the front left brake just started to squeak some when stopping. Brakes feel solid, and stop without any pulling. Opinions on what causes this are appreciated. (Leaking seal letting oil/grease get on shoe? Other?)

Thanks, as always, for sharing you experiences.

I'm off this week, and hope to get some maintenance caught up on the coach. Any opinions on the brake condition below. I did 'work' the brakes on the twisty ride, could have used the gears with the Jake more. (And will next time.)
I'm concerned about driving the coach too far, if I have a shoe dragging, causing overheating.
Was thinking I'd go for a ride close to home, and monitor the temp's and see if the left outside does reflect higher readings.
Any secret self adjusting tricks, like backing up and applying the brakes?

TIA,
Smitty
