Heat pumps

Our coach hasn't been used for about a year. (health) The other day I tried to get everything going and both heat pumps will not start. Both furnaces work fine, same thermostat, but the compressors seem to be humming but not starting. Any ideas where I should start.

Compressor can seize from lack of use. Capacitor can go bad also. Try starting with generator for max voltage and start one at time. If no start suggest a good service ctr.

Does the compressor start on cooling? If the compressor runs on cooling you are in luck, the compressor is not seized.

Let me tell you what mine do if not run for a period of time. The compressor starts but the fan does not. You can hear the hum of a running compressor because there is not the over riding sound from the fan. What I have to do is remove the interior cover and spin the fan.
You can test this by turning the thermostat to fan and checking for run. I bet they'll not run. Turn the thermostat off. Remove the covers. Turn the thermo to fan high and spin the fan. Watch your fingers. Now try heat pump or A/C.

Hi George and Carl,

I had the same issue with a Dometic a/c unit. The fix was to take it apart on the roof and lubricate the motor shaft. Seems the bearings go dry or something like that.

Mine behave the same way as George's. After several months in storage the fan motors seem to seize. I use the awning tool and a flashlight to reach in through the covers and give the squirrel cage fans a couple of spins. Saves having to remove the covers. Works every time.
