FYI - Silverleaf vs CC Gauges

Yahoo Message Number: 5046
Just installed a VMS 200 and here is my findings:

Item Gauge Silverleaf Engine Temp 205 189
Trans Temp 205 199
Oil Pressure 40 54
Oil Pres. Idle 3 18

The readings were Interstate, 70 MPH, 78 degrees and level highway.
The engine temps never got above 199 even on a long grade while towing. The Silverleaf really helps monitor things, as you watch the temp get to 199 and then back down to about 192 as the fan does it's job. There are so many great features that I can't list them all. Other than all the engine data, the gear selection and cruise control set speed is a big help.

I wish my dash gauges were that close to accurate! But then I never look at the. Silverleaf is the greatest!
And, on this topic..... Since CC replaced my charge air cooler, my fan motor, fan controller and more that one sensor.... all to correct overheating/underheating problems... my temps, as reported by my Silverleaf, run, in my opinion, too high. The engine averages 203-5 with spikes to 210 and drops to 188. The transmission averages 205 with spikes to 213. And I'm told this is acceptable.
Comments, please.

The temps seem a little high Dick compared to mine. My engine temp never hits 200. I doubt that it hurts anything, I don't remember what the max temp is in the Cummins book. How far off is your dash guage as compared to the Silverleaf? Tom

When Silverleaf tells me the temps are around 200 the dash gauges show at or above 220. CC had the ground wire on the dash gauges redone but it did not help.
If I didn't have the Silverleaf I would be on the side of the road most of the time waiting for things to cool down..

Hi,

Since we bought our coach in Oct the engine and transmission temps stayed constant at around 180. After reading this forum I checked my fan, and found that it was on full blast constantly from startup to shutdown, and I asked CCI to fix this. They did and on my last trip I ran from 188-203 engine temp and the tranz was a constant 195. I know these temperatures are higher, but this change made a huge difference in mileage, so I guess it's a compromise. The book says engine should be 186-193, and 212 is overheating. If it gets to 204 it says to take action to lower temp. Mine is right on the edge, so I've asked if they can lower it about 5 degrees.

I do not recall reading the point about taking action at 204. Would you please give me the location of that info?
My fuel consumption improved, also, with the change in temperature. Now if I can just get the back to the manufactures recommended range, I'll enjoy driving that much more.
Thanks for the info.

I continue to get inconsistent temp readings, even after the fan controller was replaced and a local freightliner dealer worked on the hydraulic system.
I'm running 175 degrees about half the time and 200 the other half ( per gauges). The trans. follows the identical range. At idle I can hear the fan starting and stopping frequently. I'm shortly heading to the outer banks of N. C. and will be spending some time in Atlanta, GA. and Greenville, S.C. Can anyone recommend a facility in the general area I'll be travelling who knows what they're doing on these fans? I had the same type of problem with a 2000 Intrigue which was finally corrected with a second replacement of the fan controller.

Walt, a place you might want to check out, would be the main Cummins repair facility in Atlanta. Called Atlanta Cummins South. Located on the Rt75/85 connector exit 89, 100 University Ave (can see it off the highway) phone: 404-527-7800.

Good Luck,

Robin

Walt,

A liitle out of the way, but Buddy Gregg is the closest CC dealer just west of Knoxville if you can't get any help with Cummins Atlanta.
Also, John Bleakley RV in Douglasville, GA has the Bluebird, Monaco, etc. line. I'm near Atlanta and will be glad to help you with phone numbers etc.

Hi,

I believe it is in the Cummins owners manual under specs. It might also be under the section about cooling. I don't have my manual now, because our Allure is in JC. I talked to Mike Scott today and he said they didn't want to tweak it lower. He felt it was low enough and would not be a problem. We will be getting our rig back on Friday. They found the problem on the Hurricane it was a kinked hose.

Hope that helps,
Joe and Patti

Walt,
I have used Cummins South in Atlanta for engine service since I bought my first CC in 1997. I still have not used them for the temp problem. I have been to the CC factory, Buddy Gregg in Texas and Plemmons a couple of times.
I would talk to CC since you are still under warranty. I don't think the cooling system is Cummins. I still don't think Cummins South is a good choice for coach work other than engine.... they are not a Coach Care shop.

Dick, I have used Buddy Gregg-Dallas all along--they're my closest dealer.
They have not been able to solve the temp problem on this or my previous CC.
I'm going to tryu Their Knoxville operation if I can get an appointment when I need it.

DICK MAY,

Your engine temp. on the silver leaf are the same as mine. We have 33k miles on our Cat C-10 and it has always ran that way and CCI says that is the way it should run. The only time that changes is when the ac is on and then it runs more evenly. I have been told that when the ac is on the fans run more often at a higher speed and if you are in a hot climate the fan will run all the time making you engine run cooler. We once had a leak on our ac and when it was fixed the repair man said that the leak would make the fan run less often because the ac pressure would be down and then the fan would not detect a need to run. We always turn the ac off when entering a campground because the high speed fans will give you a dust storm especially if you just came off the highway in the summer.

I was surprised to hear of someone replacing their Toyo tires. My set is the best riding, wearing tire I have used in 30 years of owning motorhomes.
