Norcold Repair Cost?

Yahoo Message Number: 70313
We had the fluid leak out of the back of our norcold refrig. Green liquid is visible when the inspection vent is opened. The local repair guy said we need to new cooling unit at a total cost of 2k plus.
Does this number sound right?

Thanks much

My brother in law had the same thing happen. He ordered a new cooling unit from RV Refrigeration (find them online) for abt $500-$600 and had it shipped to an RV repair shop in Tampa FL. The RV repair guy replaced the cooling unit for abt $200. Total $700-800. I think they also will give you money if you return your old cooling unit to them. The new cooling unit is an "Amish" unit and per my brother-in-law, he is extremely pleased with the result. Said the new cooling unit looks to be much better built.
We just bought a new Dometic and if/when (knock on wood) it fails, we will go the same route.

Russ:

They are charging you about $1,200.00 to much money. I would suggest shopping around.

Russ,

Pines RV Refrigeration sells replacement cooling units for about $1K delivered. I bought one of them several months ago when my Norcold (1200 LRIM) crapped out. I can say replacing the cooling unit is a difficult job so $800 to $1K in labor might not be unreasonable. There's your $2K. People that do this work need to earn a living too. It took us 15 hours to do the work. Someone who's been through the job before would do it in 1/2 that time. The Pines unit seems well made. Fans won't mount properly. You may need to move your AC plug. The external defrost drip pan won't fit in either. All of these things can be dealt with, however. It just takes a little time. Good luck with it. Here are some

I bought my NEW cooling unit for my Dometic NDR 1292 from Pines for about the same price. It took me about the same amount of time (15hrs) to change it out. These are well built CUs by the Amish. CU looks much beefier than Dometic's. Freezer stays at 0* or lower and fridge will cool to whatever temp you want it to. They come with a 5 year warranty and Pines provides excellent tech support.
