Noise while driving

Greetings

I have noticed a loud buzzing sound while driving which I have heard briefly before, but is more persistent at times now.
It seems to be from the right front area and has the sound of a compressor or buzzing electronic device. It was assumed to be a levelling item, but seems to be running more frequently.
I hear it more after getting underway, may not be heard for many miles, only to return intermittantly usually for 2 to 5+ seconds.
Any thoughts? Sounds like a confused woodpecker on tin flashing on a fireplace....but only louder....

Do you have a water circulation pump in the right front? Could be motor bearings going bad.

Do you have the Girard awning? We had a similar noise and I discovered that my automatic Girard awning motor was running. Once I hit the stop button, the noise went away. I have since readjusted the awning in/out screws and have eliminated the problem. My theory is when going down the road, the wind sensor activates the motor to bring the awning in because it thinks the awning is still out. This is caused by the "IN" switch being misadjusted. If you bring in your awning and it closes all the way, and you still hear the motor humming, your "IN" switch probably needs to be adjusted. The humming will go away after the motor overheats or when you hit the stop button on the remote, but will come back when the wind sensor activates it. To prevent the humming, the Girard operator's manual gives a good description on how to adjust the in/out screws. The adjustment screws are real sensitive and move too easy and I think, become unadjusted from vibration. I have adjusted them several times and finally put clear finger nail polish on the screw heads to hold them still.

An easy way to check the awning possibility would be to pull the awning fuse and see if the noise stops. Mine is in the IOTA panel in the back hall.

Thanks to all for the input. I operated the awning this am and the sound from that seems much too soft and unobtrusive. I did find the fuse and will remove on our next leg of the trip and report back.
My dash A/C needed charging when we took delivery of our coach 15 mo ago. It has since lost the charge again. No leak was found at that time????? I have seen others have a similar issue with loss of charge.
My question, does the Vacuum pump that some speak of that could be making the noise run intermittantly or loudly when malfunctioning. I'm not mechanical, so I don't know what a vacuum pump does. If the dash system was set only on vent, would it still run? Because we are now in SD and didn't need A/C. So the noise still occurred with the dash set on vent only.

Many good possibles for you, Ed.
Here's an odd-ball one: early on with my Girard anemometer (wind sensor) there was a problem with the bearing that sometimes caused a rapid knocking sound.... like you described. It happened when the wind blew just right when I was parked and very often while traveling. Replacement was the only solution.

The vacuum pump is in the front bay under the drivers seat on my coach. It has a accumulator on it and the pump will run till the system reaches its required vacuum. It will come on again when it looses enough vacuum to cause it to come back on. It controls the doors on A/C blower to determine which vents it will blow out of.(defrost/floor/vents ect...) It has small hoses with rubber splices connecting the selector switch to various diaphragms on the blower. If one of the hoses gets a leak in it or becomes loose it will cause the vacuum pump to cycle intermittently. So, yes it can cycle even if it is set to vent. It probably would run even if it was turned off untill it achieves the vacuum to satisfy it but I'm not sure of that. Mine had a hose come loose once and it would cycle constantly so I unplugged the pump till I had time to fix it.

Since a diesel engine does not produce a vacuum in the intake manifold like a gasoline engine does, a vacuum pump to supply a vacuum is installed to operate the A/C controls and dampers.
These controls were originally designed to be installed in auto/trucks with gas engines.
You may have a leak in one of the vacuum lines causing the pump to keep cycling.

Last Q I promise....is the vacuum pump the black unit with what looks like a ball unit over a cylinder with a few small hoses attached?

thanks for this detail Kevin. I've noticed that my 2000 Allure does the exact same thing, but wasn't sure what it was. I've found that mine cycles intermittently, however if I turn on my AC fan, the sound stops. I found the pump in the front bay a few months ago, but didn't know what it did or why it was cycling. I'll check out the hoses to see if I can find a leak. Thanks for your help.
