Rear flap gone

Finally removed the rear flap on my coach. That thing must weigh about a 100#. It sure does look different. I hope its a plus for cooling.

We did the same thing on our

bus. Concur with the weight. It seems to help with the cooling. Engine temps ranged 197 - 204. Trans stayed between 208 - 224. I'd say the trans temperatures were the ones impacted the most. Hope you see improved cooling. Please report back.

Jack, I took mine off over a year ago. Many claim, including me, that MPG will go up a few tenths.

No concerns for tossing rocks on the toads? Just curious of the downsides to removing the flaps?
I've heard others comment that the solid flaps toss up more gravel on the toads? The difference tween the Rock Solid skirts of our Bounder, and the solid flap of the CC, does result in more gravel on the toad. But, also big differences between the rigs too, so not apples to apples...

I have around 15,000 miles without the mud flap without any toad damage. I recall someone reporting the main reason CCC put on the chrome mudflaps was to advertise CC.

Roger, mine's been off over a year and 15,000 miles and no one has noticed its gone.

Going down the road the toad blocks the view.

In the campground they are admiring my lovely full body paint.

Then of course there's the coach they look at next. ;-))

THE REASON WAS ANOTHER REVENUE SOURCE AS 1990 AND PRIOR MOST EVERYTHING WAS STANDARD. THE BUSES HAD THEM, AND EVERYONE WANTED WHAT THE BUSES HAD, HENCE THE CONCEPT, EAGLE AFFINITY AND NATIONAL BUS.

You don't need the rear mud flap to know these are Country Coaches. The paint job tell the RV world we are driving a Country Coach!! I too removed the rear mud flap a few years ago and temps were lower. The only reason the mud flap was there was 1) because people wanted them with the big chrome name on it and 2) you drove down the highway advertising for CC at your own expense--you don't think they installed them for "free" when they priced out your unit

I took our flap off but modified it by removing all the rubber that was not required. The only thing holding the flap on now is two strips of the original flap that is 7 inches wide on each side. I think this will help in the cooling while still retaining the country coach logo. I can send a picture if anyone is interested.

Took factory delivery in Nov. of 98. Did not have the rear flap installed. The coach now has 160,000 + miles and have had a toad all the time. My present CR V is three and a half years old and only a few rock chips. In one of the CC Destinations magazines after we took delivery, there was a statement that said if you were going to Alaska, that CC would advise to take the rear flap off. Sorry, at my age I can not recall the issue that was in.

Thanks for the input Bill. My coach is a piker it only has 95000 miles. The only problem I see after removing my flap is the lower section of the rear fibreglass is very flexable. How did CC solve that problem on your coach?

CC must have added more glass as mine is very stable. It has withstood a couple of backing up SUE ( stupid user errors) with just scratches for reminders to be more careful.

On our 99 Allure CC Has a couple of Steel Straps 2 inchs wide from the frame to the rear cap. I removed our Mud Flap this spring in Yuma and now in Daytona beach Florida. Let me tell you no rock chips on our Saturn Vue like before with the mud flap! and I now on level I-10 in Texas at 60 mph got 9.25 mpg. Also haveing the cracked exhaust manifold replaced also helped. If you dont have these straps you can make your own. My friends say the coach looks better! Ken 99 Allure 30356

I don't know if this has anything to do with the fiberglass flexibility above the removed rear flap. If you examine the flap mountings you see that the rubber part of the flap, the flap itself, is held on by about 12 - 7/16" bolts and nuts going through the rubber to a much heavier and stiffer metal bar that's bolted to the frame by (I think) 4 larger heavier bolts and nuts. This latter bar may be to some extent structural and contribute stiffness. The flap can be removed either by removing the 12 or so smaller bolts and nut3 or the heavier bolts which gets rid of the entire flap assembly. I chose to remove the smaller 7/16" bolts because I though the heavier bar would still offer some protection to the lower end of the fiberglass overhang and also serve as a point of attachment if I chose to go with one of those brush type flaps.
