Toilet Clogs

The toilet on my coach keeps clogging. I now know when it is happening "When a large bubble comes up thru the water in the toilet. I get the plunger out seems to clear is then reclogs very easily. Will even reclog without putting anything down it but water. What is the next step?

Brian, Scott makes a 1000 sheet per roll that will work fine. When we use the quilted type it also plugs or cones and bacs up. Come on down to Harrisburg and join us for the rally.

Camping World carries a product called Tissue Digester ....It works great.
We also use the Scott "Septic Approved" toilet paper...........no problems since changing to that brand

I don't think my problem is toilet paper. I thought it was but after clearing the toilet it stopped up again with hardly any toilet paper, I was quite frugal. Seems like there is a clog in the line and was wondering what to do if plunging doesn't work.

I have had the same problem. Too much paper and ---- at the bottom of the pipe. It has a tendency to build up and will not clear. Shut off your water, get your awning rod ( with the 2" 90 at the end ), step on the foot valve and run the rod to the bottom of the toilet, which is the bottom of the tank. Work the rod and 2" 90 around to remove the blockage from that area. Remove the rod and using the water pump, fill the bowl and flush. You may need to repeat this a few times. Use a flash light to check the bottom of the tank assure you have moved the problem. Flush and M T the black tank several times to remove all of the problem.

We all might take Rich's advice and get a bidet. Costco has them on sale for $200. With the cost of TP, it might pay for itself in short order.

Sounds like the tank vent may be blocked. Check the tank vent and associated piping to be sure it is open.

From your description it sounds like it is doing the same thing mine is. An air bubble comes up through the liquid when you flush. The tank vent is probably clogged.

In all seriousness, I had that problem with our previous coach, a 1994 Holiday Rambler Endeavor (Morse?). The same solution worked for us there, but in our current CC, I find that back-flow rinsing for quite a while after every dump (of the tank, silly) has relieved us of that problem. I did find that flusing inlet clogged on one occasion, but a slightly increased water pressure at the next stop resolved the problem. Ken Harrison 2004 33' Allure #31035

I agree with Mikee.

You may also want to consider installing a roof mounted power vent called "Little Stanker".

It will generate a slight negative pressure in the black tank so that when the toilet is flushed it draws air down into the tank.

I installed one to eliminate tank odors that would rise up when the tank was flushed.

It works very well.

The 12v power it requires can be fed up thru the ref vent and the control can be mounted under the ref below the drawers next to the propane detector.

12v can be tapped from the propane detector line.

Brian,

To go along with what Charlie suggested by creating a negative pressure via the vent I found that a venturi cap called an Xtreme Vent works very well to prevent odors from working their way into the coach.
One source is http://www.coilnwrap.com/categories/Shop/Xtreme-Vents/ and I believe Camping world has something similar. These swivel with the wind and require no power.

A very basic question: do you allow the black (and grey) tank to fill to at least one quarter before emptying, or do you leave the valve open? From some of the descriptions, it sounds like the latter.
Yours is a straightforward style commode - - gravity - - and I can't follow how it is getting clogged.

I couldn't either. Yes I always let the black tank fill to over half (this weekend I let it go to 7/8. I have never left the valve open. I do believe my wife was using too much toilet paper. Guess I must have a big pile of poop and paper at the bottom of the pipe. I am going to try to stir it around and see if that helps.

That would reduce the capacity of the tank, but would not cause slow flushing and burping. Burping is usually vent related. Check the vent for the black tank. It could be obstructed. If you have a tee vent on the roof, it is actually a venturi. which creates a slight vacuum when moving, close one end and blow in the other and see if it open.

FYI On our older Allure the User Guide says nothing down the Tiolet! I wont tell Ya what we do with the soild paper but we make it go away! LOL! When I have guests I let them use paper and wont go there. Great Post! Ken 99 Allure 30356

Hello,

First of all what type of toilet is it? If it's a Headhunter or vacuum style toilet a snake may not work (further inspection is required), but if it's a sealand or a more traditional style you could run a snake through the pipe to clear the line. There was one time I worked on toilet having the same problem come to find out the wax ring the installed somewhere had smashed together causing a small hole not allowing waste to go down the line.
