After sitting for a time, my steps get enough dust and stuff (found a large tumbleweed once) that they will only activate part way. I fixed that by spraying a high powered water spray into the guide bearings, then following up with massive quantities of dry silicone spray. That also usually cures the "squeak" that results when stepping on the step. Needs doing out here in the dusty areas about twice a year.
