Siphon/pressure/check? valve

Yahoo Message Number: 73213
Last night I Dumped my tank turned on the flush and went to the back to hook up the jeep. When I finished and went back to the dump valve there was water everywhere. I shut off the water. I went inside and found water running down my hallway into the carpets, a mess!
When I went to find the cause today I discovered the flush line ran into the coach and back out. After some tearing apart I found some kind of valve behind the shower. It looks somewhat like an old fashioned radiator pressure relief valve. I am passing through Dawson City and naturally could not find a valve like it so I made a bypass hose.

What is this valve

Why is it inside the coach

Do I need it or can I just keep the bypass hose on.
I wonder if this is the source of the odor smell I have had in this area for ever. (it is hooked to the black tank)

Thanks

John,

That is a vacuum breaker that prevents any water that has come in touch with the black tank from backing up to the hose. Yes you need it. It is a very common device and any Home Depot, Lowes or Ace hardware should have it. It screws onto the tubing. The failure of the device might have been the cause of odors.

I had the same thing happen through an anti-backflow valve that stuck open, letting water into the coach from the rinse water supply. Thankfully it was fresh water that overflowed. Still a mess. They can be replaced at the hardware store, or bypassed. Every few years it is a good idea to replace the anti-siphon valves under the sinks, about 1.5" in diameter, also at hardware store. They can let odors into the coach if not well sealed.

Hello,

The valve is a vacuum break/ check valve for the hose hook up, keeps water from the tank coming out to the "No Fuss Flush System" hose hook up. The installation instructions show to raise the valve above the water line of the tanks. Hope this helps.
