US 24 south of I-70

Hello everyone,

We are planning a trip to Eleven Mile State Park in Colorado in the first of October, and are considering traveling south on US24 from I-70 and then east on US285 to the park. Have any of you traveled on this route and if so, how would it be for a 40ft with tow? Are there any steep elevation grades or decents to be wary of? I traveled the route two years ago with my 42' Intrigue pulling an Odessey with an ISL engine. Its a great very scenic drive. Being a RR fanatic and a DRGW fan, I ve always wanted to drive this route as it allows the observer to see bits and pieces of the famous approach to Tennessee Pass, the highest standard gauge RR mountain pass in the US. Its up and down with some 7% grades and a few scenic turns. It may be a little late to observe the Golden Aspen in peak color, but should be a site to behold and to remember the rest of your lives. I am guessing you should plan your average speed to be between 30 and 40 mph. Mine was 34 as I remember without notes in front of me. Make sure you start out with a full TANK as diesel can be pricey in the mountains where available. Others can help you ought here, I bought fuel in Leadville, no it was Buena Vista on our way to Salida. Take your time half the fun is getting there and seeing the Columbine.
