Loose Tag Axle Bolting

The latest Country Coach Destination's had an article about checking Tag Axle Bolting. Their reference was to the Frame/Structure bolting coming loose and for owners to have check their Tag Axle bolting retorqued. We had a problem with our Tag Axle this summer on a 13K mile trip to Alaska. On our trip back to Florida needed new front tires and front end aligned. With a stop in Eugene Oregon and just by luck as the Coach was being pulled into the shop we heard a knocking coming from the Tag Axle. After removing the Tag Hub Cap found three of the eight Axle nuts had come off and the rest were loose. This is major as if not found would of lost all the Hub oil, possible bearing damage, and a chance the wheel could of come off. After checking the other Axle Hub found those still on but loose. All were retightened. We have owned this Coach for five years and would check the oil level in the Front and Tag Axle hubs on a regular basis but never checked the nuts on the axle. Recommend if you have a Tag to have the nuts checked. By the way, checked the frame/structure bolting yesterday and all ours are tight.

Pete,

Thanks for that very important information. I have never checked the axle nuts; however, I will begin to do so.
