I need advice from someone in the group. After a two hour drive, Smart
Tire temp. warning light went on for the inside rear tire on the drivers side. Temp for that tire was 185, while other three rear tires were in the mid 140 range. Cold pressure for the offending tire is 95, while other three are 100.

Two questions: other than underinflation, what would cause the excessive heat. Also, is 187 indeed excessive, or should the Smart Tire be reprogramed (set at 180)?

It's my understanding that it's common for the right inside dual to run at higher temperatures when on a crowned road. So, if you were running crowned (usually secondary) roads at the time, that wouldn't be unexpected. The difference in temp really surprises me, though, considering that the "offending" tire was only 5psi under-inflated.
Are your tires inflated IAW actual weight carried on them? If not, *all* your duals may be under-inflated. If so, the 185 degree tire might've been *more* than 5psi under-inflated!

Dick: Just a thought: Could you have a slack adjuster on the brakes that is tighter than the others, or not backing off all the way? Larry

Because I dont want to worry about "underinflation" and tire hearting problems...Ive always inflated my ires to what C Coach says on the ID plate...120 PSI front....110 PSI on the rear.
The air ride in mine is smooth enough I dont "experience" rough ride from over inflation...and after 5 -6 hrs on the interstate..I can get out and lay the backside of my hand to the sidewall and its not even warm.

Although air suspension provides a smooth ride, regardless ... over-inflated tires (1) are subject to increased wear in the center of the tread (probably not a problem with tires that are typically replaced based on time vs wear); (2) give less than designed traction, since the tire is bulging in the center of the tread; and, (3) are more subject to pothole damage, which may be hidden.
