Broken cargo latch & replacing catches

Yahoo Message Number: 77250
On my 2006 Inspire, I have several cargo catches that are broken. This is the plastic piece that catches the flange on the sides of the door (2 per door).
I purchased the lifetime replacements from RB Machining in Lancaster, CA. Very nice units.
Okay the rod end goes through into the back of the cargo latch, and is caught with a little keeper.

I can NOT get those back on. Period.
Soooooo, I went down to the local mom & pop RV repare place and asked if there was a tool. He said no, normally the rod come from inside - out, and just put a nut driver on it and push it on.
Well, okay - maybe CC put them in backwards - I went home and tried to force the rod end from the back - and snapped off the whole plastic/nylon piece that moves. &((&%$^ and lots of other words!
So now what do I do? Where do I purchase the nylon piece that goes onto the door latch? And how do I get those rod ends on the rest of the latches? Is there a tool of some sort? - it would have to hold the keeper, and then somehow mash it onto the rod, and the space between the latch and the plastic piece that I broke is less than fingertip width (I can't force my pinky in there)- I'm flumuxed, frustrated...

I'd upload pictures of what I'm talking about if I knew how...
maybe I'll go turn some wood and take out frustration on making wood chips.

Rod:

I did a search under 'baggage door locks' and came up with
http://www.ebay.com/itm/TriMark-Lock-RV-Motorhome-Baggage-Compartmen-t-Latch-door-handle-utility-TM500-/280799440287?pt=Motors_RV_Trailer_Camper_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item4160f36d9f#ht_2886wt_1165
Check out this e-bay site. I believe this is the part that you will need to replace. Check with the seller to see if they sell these without the lock cylinder and it should cost less.
If anyone knows of a tool to install the 'keepers', let me know also. My finger has been sore for 3 weeks!

Gil,

I have used a very thin pointed knife and slip the tip under the keeper and work around the edge until it pops off. Not easy, however, saves the keepers. I have changed out 4 of these over the past. I will be replacing any further latches with the metal ones which will solve the poor design of the plastic ones.
