Tire Pressure Monitors?

Yahoo Message Number: 5623
I may be replacing our Intrigue's tires sooner than later. Does anyone have anything good/bad to say about various brands of tire pressure monitors (SmartTire, etc.)?

-I have the Smart Tire system and it works fine.I just wish it could read 8 tires instead of only 6 so I would have info on my tag tires. Macke

We love our SmartTire on our 2001 Intrigue. It's already warned us about one of our inside duals that had lost about 20 pounds of pressure. We haven't figured out why it periodically loses pressure, but at least with the Smarttire we feel confident we know about what's happeninig with it. (It has lost pressure twice...but has also been driven 2500 miles WITHOUT losing pressure...go figure...)

I agree, we'd like one that could also monitor the toad's pressure at the same time. We'll get one to do that as soon as we can find a compatible system.

Definitely consider this system!

Dick,

We have Smart Tire on our 2001 Magna and we love it. It has never let us down although we only have it on six tires. The tag runs without a system because ST can only do 6 tires and 2 systems can not be used together. ST is also easy to read and easy to flip between modes. We like the readouts on temperature as well as pressure.

Take a look at the Smartire.com website. The Generation 2 system called Road Voice will be able to take up to 20 wheels of both low and high pressure. I am currently investigating the possibilities of adding this system to my coach and towed vehicle. So far, it seems to be promising.

I think I heard that the gen-2 system was out but there were no high pressure wheel monitors available yet. Is there anything new on that front?

I don't have a need for the expanded system (no tag and not interested in tow car sensors). But I am very happy with the system.... after proper programming based on weighing the coach.

You may have to cut-and-paste this website URL, but clickon http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=519&e=19&u=/ap/20030807/ap_on_re_us/tire_pressure_1 for a story on a federal appeals court rejecting the proposed tire pressure monitoring device rule.

Apparently, they didn't like the fact that the proposed rule would have allowed automakers to "choose between a less expensive 'indirect' system that would work off the antilock braking system and a more accurate 'direct' system of monitors in each wheel."

The November '03 issue of *Consumer Reports* has a report on tire pressure monitors. Check your mail box, newsstand or library to read the issue.
I called PDK, since their Intellivalve product was top-rated (the only one rated "Excellent"), and told them their Intellivalve website is down. The person answering the phone said that it should be up shortly, and they should have product and pricing for motorhomes within the next 30 days.

Seeking some advice from the CC group regarding replacement of the SMARTire tire pressure monitors that came with my 2004 Allure.
When I replaced the tires at the 7-year point, I determined continued use of the SMARTire system was no longer possible due to lack of technical and supply support.
Here in Yuma, the local swap meet has a dealer for TST (Truck System Technologies) tire pressure monitor. It includes valve stem caps that transmit data to a receiver in the coach. Sounds ideal, but I have held off buying until I can research further.
Any comments on this or any other system you would recommend would be most helpful.

I have the TST system and like it. They seem to be accurate. The screen is a little small, the buzzer could be louder and once when I was driving in heavy rain some of the tires weren't monitoring. With that said I would buy it again. Does a good job of tracking the temp as well as the pressure.

I too have the TST's on my 2000 40' Magana and my Jeep Liberty. I moved the system to this coach from a 36' Winnebago and now have about 4 years experience with them. With the Winnebago I could receive all the signals from both coach and Jeep with the small antenna on the receiver. After moving to the Magna, I was dropping signals. TST includes a longer dipole antenna and when I switched to that antenna I no longer had dropped signals.
I don't mind the screen size but I do wish the warning alert were louder.

Pete,

What would one expect to pay for a TST set of 10 sensors, monitor and extended distance antenna? Did you simply tap into under dash 12v line for the monitor? Did you mount above dash or where? I believe my '98 is similar to your 2000.

I've had the STS Monitors for two years now and really like them, the only down side is the batteries only last for one year but are easy to replace. I also switch the sensers from my toad to my enclosed trailer from time to time and have saved a couple of tires.

The monitor plugs into your cigarette lighter but you could rewire it to hook up to available 12 volts. On my coach, the instrument part of the dash sits ontop of the flat dash that goes across the front of the coach. I cut an old CD, just something I had available that looked like it would work, about 2 1/2 inches by the width of the monitor and slipped that between the instrument part of the dash and the flat part. I use velcro to hold the monitor to the CD. The CD does not show as it is completely covered by the monitor..
The longer dipole antenna comes with the system. I ended up mounting the antenns on the center post of the windshield.
I think TST shows the price of a 10 set system like mine for $499. I paid a bit more than that when I bought mine the first time as I bought a 6 set system and added 4 sensors to the Jeep at a later date.

I also have the smart tire system and am thinking about upgrading to something that works well. In looking at the TST they seem to have two models of valve stem sending units. They all need to be installed with a wrench at first. It appears the original ones have no tire filling capabilities unless you remove the unit with a wrench, inflate and then reinstall, a bit of a hassle.
The new ones you can fill without removing.
Which units do you all have?

I was also looking for a video of the system monitor in action ( other than the one tire set up video) as the smart tire screen is very small and not very user friendly in my opinion.
Appreciate some additional input on which sensors you have bought and why?? Or anything else out there that someone might like better.

thanks

I can't give in first hands opinions, other then shipping was prompt. But we also are replacing our Smart Tire 1 system (always thought it was odd that CC sold a coach at this price level, and only had 6 of the 8 tires covered - no Smart Tire sender on the Tags).
I went with the TST system, bought direct from them. X8 507 pass thru senders for the coach, and X4 507 cap senders for the toad, the repeater to put in the rear coach closet, and the monitor.
Our coach was built in Sept of 2003, and the oem Smart Tire senders were still sending out a signal. The right outside rear signal, was 'off and on' - so it was time...

Smitty,

If memory serves the generation Smart Tire available to CC in 2004 only supported 6 sensors. Later generations support more. I don't know if something else was on the market at the time.
